Thanks for the assistance, much appreciated. | Hmmm, well I've used Laplink once that was about 1992'ish and I think it may have chaged since then, and it might not even be the same program, your problems could be as simple as getting a newer version, perhaps it doesn't like XP. But you can do most of what it does with a standard Windows network, and XP it's so easy to set one up, but you will need a couple of network cards and a CAT5 cross over cable, do you have those? I ask because Laplink used to use a serial to serial connection. |

| No network cards or CAT5 cable Sonic, suspect that I need a newer version of the software,I will have a look on the net and see if it mentions anything ? the system worked so well before as you say via the USB sockets.
Failing this a look at the latest version in my computer shop.
Love the XP now that I am familiar with it,dont want to go back now to Windows 98 or ME etc,it is a far superior operating system.

| Now that is interesting ! notice that Laplink gold 11.0 is advertised on this very page (take a look above in the sponsored links) however on checking it only states windows 98 and ME etc but no mention of use with XP ? I am beginning to wonder if a version for XP has yet to appear ? what a co-incidence.

| | Scale Model Builder | Don't know if this will be any help as it's years since I used Laplink - If you're using a serial cable - have you checked your serial port config on both machines? |

| | Scale Model Builder | On XP:- Start-Control Panel-Adminstrative Tools-Computer Management.
Select Device manager - double click Ports (COM & LPT) and then double click the port you're using for Laplink. Select the Port Settings tab and you'll see the config for the selected port.
ON 95 or 98:- Right click My Computer and select Device Manager then continue as above.
There could be a shorter way of getting there in XP but I don't know it.
Make sure ALL settings are the same - if they are try setting a lower speed.
Hope this is of some help.

| Thanks Scottie,I have checked the XP settings as follows -
Bits per second 9600
Data bits 8
Parity-none
Stop bits 1
Flow control 1
When I get the lap top back then I will compare the two, will probably get back here for help if not sure, thanks,Barry.

| | Guest | Laplink can also use a parallel connection if you have the right leads
alternatively, a usb to usb network cable costs about £12 these days

| Noobie I have been using the USB connection successfully in the past with ME to Windows 98,but for some as yet unresolved reason it will not work with XP to ME ?
All that I get is the documents box for the machine in question, the machines will not talk to each other ie they will not link via the cable as before ?
I cannot get it confirmed anywhere that Laplink is XP compatible ?

| | Guest | I had a similar problem that I couldn't sort, but when I bought the usb network cable the system was quite happy once I'd installed the updated driver. The only downside was that it conflicted with ntl broadband modems if they were also using usb, didn't seem to mind when the broadband connection was on lan.
I've checked a few details and it appears that only Laplink Gold is XP compatible. Do they know how to get you to buy the latest or what?
Beyond this, I'm pretty much stumped for a solution for you.
