| Can anyone help here with this one ? Right you computer geeks try and get your head around this one for me please ?
This is the situation,I have a lot of photographs stored online in one of those on-line storage albums,up until now I have not any problems with them but when I recently opened my albums on netsnapshot.com there were no pictures but just blank boxes, with a 'x' in the top left corner ? I contacted the support line and they said that it was caused by my privacy settings in Nortons firewall and to play around with the settings ? a bit vague if you ask me as there are three basic levels of security, mine is currently set on medium and in the past I have had no problems retrieving pictures, and I am a bit reluctant to change it for a setting that is less secure.
So can anyone please tell me either the setting it should be on,or any other ideas why the pictures are not loading ? this again has only happened since I went over to XP and reloaded the normally excellent Nortons firewall.
Many thanks for your time.

| Theres nothing wrong with Norton products, although personally I prefer Sygate firewall, this isn't a problem with your firewall, first of all try clearing your cache, in IE go to Internet options and delete files, see if that helps, if it doesn't let me know, there is something else that causes it but it escapes me at the moment, but I will find out |

| | Guest | I know this may seem like a lamer, but have you checked that XP's own firewall isn't active as well.
It has been known to conflict badly with other firewalls.
Personally, I trashed XP from my machine and returned to ME. Seem may think I'm insane, but it works better and quicker for me.

| Well I disabled Nortons and everything uploaded instantly,so it must have been the firewall ? the question now is this, will it be safe to work without the Nortons firewall enabled whilst working on those photographs on the web ? is the XP firewall adequate protection or do I need to be careful ?
One sequel to this is that today I joined another on-line photo storage source imagestation.com which is run by Sony,no problems either uploading or viewing with the Nortons firewall enabled, weird or what ?
Would reducing the privacy level be adequate for normal web work ? there are some nasties out there that embed into some programmes.

| | Guest | XP's own firewall is fairly basic, but can help filter most of the unwanted hacks out.
As you know, if someone is determined to get into your machine, they will, regardless of what you have running.
I used to use Zone Alarm, but when I couldn't get it to behave with my filesharer and couldn't send or receive files through ICQ, it get uninstalled.
The amount of unwanted attention that firewalls stop has actually deceased. So much so that I don't have a firewall active on my machine! Any unwanted intrusions are usually spotted by my machine acting up and a swift reset sorts it out.

| Disabling the Nortons firewall when I log on seems to have cured the problem so there could have been a conflict as you say,I just switch it on and off as required, although Firewalls are intended for incoming stuff they do seem to affect other things, for example when I upload to my ISP with Cute software I need to disable Nortons otherwise it just refuses to load, dont know why this should affect outgoing material but it does ?
Previously I ditched Mc Afee in favour of Nortons because I just could not get satisfactory updates to download for their firewall, then attempts to contact their support proved futile so I cut my losses and bought the Nortons, everyone seems to have their favourites and it is interesting to compare notes.

| | Scale Model Builder | My two pennoth (for what its worth).
I use Kerio Personal Firewall and don't know much about Norton's, I've heard it can be a real pain as your question seems to suggest.
If you have the option to set a 'Trusted Zone' or 'Trusted Site' try adding it to that and see what happens.
Personally I don't like running without a firewall even though I'm behind a router that stops most intrusive inbound 'attacks'
Hope this is of some help.

| | All Round Modeller | I am on Xp and using the built in firewall with no problems, Normally if you get a box with a x in top left corner where a pic should be, right click on the box and select the show picture option from the menu...this normally sorts it.
