Search Engines.

Fascinating things these search engines, especially that googly one ! I noticed that people were e-mailing me a lot recently on one the of the aeroplanes that I used to work on called 'Scarlet Angel' she was a famous racing machine called a Comper Swift that made a long distance record to India back in 1932 by someone who kept her on a tea plantation.
Google must have put the site on their system as it obviously was picking something up so I gave it a try myself,I just typed in 'Scarlet Angel' to see what came up and sure enough it led me to a page with a mention of this aircraft, the point is the text was embedded in the web site but it still managed to spot it ! I find these search engines staggering as to pick up a couple of words from literally miliions, zillions of items like this ? how does it work, can anyone throw any light on it ?
Does this mean that they can pick up articles etc posted here as well, and if so how do they do it because there must be an initilal human element involved,or is it done on these so called 'meta tag' thingies ?

I think it has something to do with these meta tag thingies, But google will not find everything you enter, especially if it is on a site which requires a password log in to that site first. A good example is say if you are on Friends Reunited, you can try a search on your own name but it will not bring back the friends reunited site showing you are there.
I think this tends to work on sites which are openly viewable more than anything else. Some sites will have example pics which you can find on a search so that the sites get the traffic but if you want to see more you have to join the site or even subscribe. SE Technology is a good example of this when looking for Ekranoplans, you will get the pics free but if you want the full technical details and drawings you have to subscribe to the site to get them..... ( and i bet you thought I meant porn sites as well lol )

Regards............Mark

It's partly to do with meta tags but they have to be relevant to the contents of your pages, Google, MSN, inktomi, Looksmart and a few others are all regular visitors here, if you search on yahoo.co.uk for scale model planes this site comes up No.2 and that is 1 of the meta tag words, but the content of your pages and links to them are more important, if you make words in your pages links to other pages on your site then that will increase the amount of time a spider will spend on your site, which in turn will increase your rankings.

For more info here's a couple of sites to try

Fascinating subject, and I used to loose things in our office filing cabinet ! the internet sure has changed the way that we live, can you imagine what it would be like to go back to pre-internet days for example ? I for one would be lost, you meet so many interesting people out there with like interests, but you know I really believe this is only the very beginning and things will escalate to new dimensions, virtual cyberspace where you log in and fly or sail models together on virtual flying fields or boating lakes ? who knows what they will develop, but one thing is for sure when black and white television first came out that was only the very beginning of things, and then along came colour and next video recorders, where will it end I wonder ?

I used to have a CB before the Internet and used to spend hours and hours on that, now that has been substitute by the Internet, it is amazing how far it has come it such a short time, the first time I logged on to the Internet I was using a 6k modem (yes 6 not 56) now I have a 3MB connection which is a massive difference, before a 10MB files would take hours if not days to download now it takes about 2 seconds.

Don't you just love technology

If this thread goes on much longer then someone will be telling us about Noah's steam driven, wooden computer which told him what animals he had and counted to two!

Cavemen had computers, they used to put a notch on their club every time they dragged some poor whench into their cave ! they used to place the used bones from animals in a line to count them and remind them which day it was ! those Flintstone squarish wheels have a lot to answer for, just think of the day someone discovered that the more those wheels were dragged across the ground the better and faster they went as the edges wore down ! technology is really wonderful, and so forth the computer was born, from simple wooden beginnings !
