Problems with XP crashing.

Its happened twice these past couple of days, busily working away when all of a sudden the screen goes blue in a flash, then the computer crashes and switches itself off.
To re-boot takes a while as it will not fire up then a Microsoft page tells you that it was caused by a driver problem ? but cannot specify the root of the problem.
The following legend appears on the Microsoft page-
'Stop ox 00000076
Process_ has_ locked
pages error
Message on windows 2000'
The crash just happens,no specific programme,it is really annoying especially when you have un-saved data in process,is there are known problem with Windows XP because I notice that there is a magazine available on the book stores, this has a disc supplied which says 'stops crashes on XP' are they not telling us something ?
I have all the essential Moicrosoft updates installed.
Any ideas anyone ? its a bit dis-concerting to say the least.

hmmm the blue screen fortunately I haven't seen one of them for a while, if you are sure that you are up to date with all the M$ updates then there's a chance it could be hardware.

Don't know how confident you are with taking your computer apart, but all you need to do is take out the memory give it a good blow, give the memory slot a good blow as well, do that with other peripheral and make sure your cables haven't come loose, there's no need to do it with the CPU, it might be just a bit of dust that's got in to your slots, that is what I would do first, then I would look at the software side because will be like looking for a needle in a haystack

Just checked the Micrsoft essential updates again and downloaded two more which I had not bothered with before, will do what you say regarding the memory boards if the problem persists.
Odd thing is that I have not added any new hardware of late ?
Thanks Sonic.

I have been running Xp for nearly 3 years now with no problems (Xp Home version that is) I have kept up to date with all the Microsoft Updates and as a result, I avoided the last 3 big viruses that crashed most peoples machines.

The Fixes were there before the viruses hit (MSBlast, Sasser and MyDoom)...the hackers know most people are too slow to update their machines which is why a lot of people got caught out, but it does pay to do so.....even updating drivers. Win Xp rarely crashes, yes I have had a couple over the last 3 years but I know the cause of these and have rectified it.

Yes updating is a pain but worth it for a stable machine.

Ps....No I don't work for Microsoft or any software company...but I did build this computer.

Regards..........Mark.

One thing that I dont fully understand with this driver thing, they say that going to the Microsoft critical updates page and installing the updated drivers, fine, but what if you install some new hardware and the drivers conflict ? nine times out of ten the hardware manufacturers make it so difficult to get the newer driver, they would rather sell you new kit,I think that on their part this is irresponsible, the worst offenders are these manufacturers who were very slow to update their hardware for use with XP.
Surely it would not be too difficult for Microsoft to standardarise on drivers and work out an industry standard on all of the products,a bit like the Twain set up ? just my two penneth, over to you super geeks !

I think that XP has been out so long now that driver issues aren't really an issue now

XP crash

Have ypu tried the restore system and restore the system to what it was before the crash happened. You do not loose any programmes that have been installed. Also disc cleanup and defragment. I use the last two frequently to get rid of unwanted junk

Start > Control Panel > performance and maintenance, system restore will then show up on the left hand menu on screen, click there and follow the instructions.

Did that George still no difference, however I think I know the cause ? this morning whilst scanning with my Mustak 1200 CP it crashed twice, every time I boot up the computer it tells me that something is disabled as it is known to give problems, then it takes you to the Microsoft page, then a link to Roxio Inc's page where it prompts you to purchase new software, only problem is it only deals with U.S.A & Canada ! so atrempts to purchase are thwarted straight away.
The driver that I want is at http://www.scanner-drivers.com/driver/125/125332.htm file number S6E 10XV47XP.RAR but when I downloaded it there was nothing in the zip file !! you see now how this is turning into an epic,I am cornered every way that I turn,I think the only thing to do is buy a new scanner that has XP compatible software, the only thing that worries me now is if that non compatible driver is half loaded hence the constant start up prompts will it continue to give me trouble ? if only there was a way to remove it somehow ?
Thanks Bluewave.
I contacted Drivers.com to let them know about the duff zip but have had no answer from them ?
