Another Wireless network problem.

Hello guys. I have been using my laptop for college and it has inbuilt wireless connection. When i come to search for the connections it doesn't find any networks. The light that shows the wireless working is not flashing. I have checked all the system detail and it is working fine. I have also got a wireless card which i cant find any drivers for. it is a D-Link DWL-650M 2XR. I have searched the website and there is no drivers available so it says. Does anyone know where i could get driver for the card.
Thanks for reading.

Hello:
I'm a IT-hardware tech by day:
You say its a Dlink? Is a ethernet card showing up in the device manager? If its XP, right click on "my computer", choose properties from the menu then hardware tap up top. Look for any yellow caution symbols. This will at least tell you if any hardware is found. They are extremely specific in not only model numbers BUT versions of the particular model. I'll see if I can do a search for you and hopefully post a link. Also, what brand make and model is this laptop? Sometimes vendors have specific driver restore CD's that have all drivers needed for that type.

Hello
Erm well i did check the card and it says port is working properly. There is no yellow symbol. The laptop is a Advent 7039. I did download some drivers for it but it did not work.

Howdy miss charlotte,

Ok, I went to google, typed in D-Link DWL-650M 2XR driver and came up with this link:

http://www.wardrive.net/drivers/dlink

I found lots of dwl 650m downloads, but none with the 2XR at the end. However, there is a contact us link on the left, they might be able to tell you which d/l you need. I took the liberty of getting their contact addy for you here:

webmaster@wardrive.net

If the above doesnt help, you might try a generic driver, you can find some on this link....however, I did not specify your card model for this search, you might try specifying your card model and add the words "generic driver" while searching google:

http://www.google.com/search?num=30&...wireless+cards

Anyway, i hope this helps you, I think that contacting the company would be best though.

have a good day,

greg

Hmm again:
Well, based on my own experience, if no caution signs or yellow spots are listed in the device manager AND a nic card is present and detected then maybe XP "wireless config manager" needs to be started. Simply right click on "my computer", choose "manage" from the menu and find "services" from the left window pane. Once chosen, choose and highlight 'Services" from the right pane now and scroll down to the W section and choose the service "windows zero configuration" Try to start the service OR restart the service. This tells windows if it or the NIC card should manage the wireless network service. Linksys and netgear in paticular will try to over ride the windows service and cut out any other network it sees other than your own router. There really is no "generic" NIC card driver that would normally reside in the i386 folder where absoultly generic device drivers (usb keyboard, mice ect reside. Also, in addition to the make and model of the network card, check if any version is listed. Hope this helps you out a little, Jeff

Hi Charlotte

On many laptops the built in wireless network sub system is turned off by default. I suspect it's something to do with the use of laptops on aircraft!

On my elderly Acer pressing the 'Fn' key and the F4 key together toggles the internal wireless system on and off.

It's worth a try if you can figure out which is the appropriate key combination (if any) on your laptop. Best of luck.

Barry
