I still have a conflict somewhere and have been trying uninstalling and re-installing different things,I am considering removing the Nortons firewall and installing the dedicated XP one ? would there be any immediate benefit to do this do you think ?

I understood that the Windows Firewall installed regardless and that it was enabled by default.
This means that you can get real problems by installing a 'third party' firewall like Norton UNLESS you remember to switch OFF the Windows one.
Check by going to Control Panel>Security Centre>Windows Firewall.

I know I fell foul of this on my laptop (XP Home) 'cause no one told me about this. (At least thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!)

I believe XP Pro has the same functionality.

I must admit to being more comfortable with the Norton version - it at least gives you warning that it has blocked incoming and outgoing stuff. It also updates its settings as tha state of knowledge increases. The Windows one just seems to sit in the background and 'do its thing' whatever that is and there is no evidence of any updating going on.
I have been told however that Norton is memory intensive since it runs a number of background processes (total including all the windows stuff is around 33) .. so if you are short of memory?!

Regardless I'm sticking with norton - the Confidence Factor thing!

Any third party firewall worth its salt should switch off Windows firewall for you. Mine did. It should at least have an option somewhere to disable Windows firewall. However, in XP Pro, don't misinterpret the Security Centre which will still report it as on. What it really means is that your new third party firewall is on. I've spoken with a few people who believed it meant Windows firewall was still on. If you click on the arrow next to the "on" button you'll see.

In any case a report citing a hardware conflict/problem is unlikly to be a firewall problem.

I read recently that the next version of XP will have a different firewall facility which adds more flexibility,at the moment the Microsoft alert comes on regardless,in fact twice ! on the next version it will not,currently it tries to over-ride and ignore any firewall installed as it does not recognise Nortons and tells you that your computer is at risk (which it is not if you already have Nortons installed !!) One thing that I learned very quickly is never to take too much notice of Microsoft alerts,there is obviously no love lost between third party software suppliers and Mr Gates,if this was the case then why did they not make a firewall package part of windows in the first place ? by the way has anyone had problems with critical update service pack 2 by the way ? it created all sorts of problems for myself.

I have been following this thread, run both XP Home, XP Pro and Norton Security, as well as Norton AntiVirus. I have applied XP-SP2 to all systems, 2 Dell Lap Tops, and 3 Dell Precision 220s. Norton Security has updates that need to be run after the install of XP SP2. They basically configure the MS Firewall for you. All systems are set to auto update both XP and Norton. No issues with any systems.

I am also running Microsoft 2003 Server, with both Norton Products. I have already applied the pre release candidate W2K3-SP1 on the server without any problems.

Your hardware error has nothing to do with Norton or XP. Wild guess, your HD is failing, and when you read or write to it using your scanner or database program, the CPU has no where to store or retrieve the data. Have you looked at your System Event Logs? Another thought, you might have a bad stick of RAM.

I would be very careful with any software that can turn a firewall off, you should only ever have 1 firewall running at once, same with virus checkers, if you have more than 1 of each they will compete for the same memory and cause a lot of problems, I use Sygate for outgoing programs and my router has a firewall built in for incoming, never had a problem with them.

It sounds like you basically have a new system. I gotta tell you though, if you are running either version of XP, it really would be best if you installed SP2, as well as any of the monthly updates since its release. This is what I do for a living, and I have seen the results of not being up to date with the latest patches. Happy Holidays - Mark

*** Thanks Mark,everything is now in place SP2,plus all further updates have been added this evening,I value and respect what you say,it looks as if all of my previous problems were caused by a faulty system,I hope that what I went through and the outcome will assist someone else in the future.
I notice that I have not been alone with this error message as an internet search showed similar unsolved messages,the answer was with one of those servers you pay money to get the answer,by helping each other here we all learn new things freely,scale-models is a great community.
