laptop problem

i have a laptop which my other half uses to do her shopping etc online, there has been an annoying habit of it switching off for no apparent reason.it restarts no probs. the laptop is running from the mains so it`s not teh battery, any ideas ?

about the same time as this started ( i only find out these things when she wants on my pc) there was a problem connecting to teh network/internet.
teh pc was showing a connection ,but was showing it at 10mbps .
i checked connections etc .
i have done a roll back to teh date when i installed the m`soft SP2, and can now get online. is this a virus ?
the laptop is running win xp , ( not a pirate copy)
pentium p4 2.4 processor is just under a year old, it`s the same old , when i ask if she `s downlaoded or played about with anything she says " NO!!"
any help would be appreciated, cheers

Adz..

Personally I wouldn't install SP2 I heard a lot of people are having problems they never had before.

Have you checked your hibernation settings and other power off setting?

Adzam - I remember reading somewhere about a month ago that there was a virus around causing the switch off problems. Can't remember which one though. Wouldn't do any harm to run a check. I'm using SP2 as well and have had no problems. While we are talking about computers - do you think you could remind me how to upload pics again please. My memory has gone blank - it's my age you know! The link I had to the upload manager has disappeared!

Hi Andrew,

If you are running off the mains, make sure you have removed the main battery !!
LiH batteries do NOT like being on perpetual trickle charge. It really shortens their life.

Agree about checking the power management settings .. make sure they are set to 'never' switch off (including the hard drive and the display!!)

Also make sure that the cooling air inlet is not blocked by paper on the desk etc.. Overheated processors tend to switch off in self defence.

I have a laptop that appears not to want to switch off at all!! Everything powers down and the screen goes black with a satisfying 'plick' ... but the battery still runs down over about a day.
Sheesh ... wasn't life simple with a bit of paper and a pencil!! or a bloody great OFF switch.
