Message for Beermonster....

Hi John - wondered if you can help with this problem - a couple of days ago I noticed that my windows startup and shut down sounds had disappeared. I've looked in Control Panel/Sounds, if I highlight one of the speaker icons ie 'Exit Windows' I get the message "Windows cannot find the file c\windows\media\logoff.wav" This happens with all the other sound choices. Have I lost all my WAV files or are they lurking somewhere and need setting up again? If they have disappeared can I get them off my Packard Bell installation disks without having to do a full reinstal? - if a reinstall is the only option I'll do without them for now - can't think how they vanished in the first place. The bottom window by the way shows 'windows default sounds'

I don't think you have lost them but just check first, go to My Computer C:\WINDOWS\Media\ see if the files are there, also right click on one of the files go to properties and tell me what is says next to the opens with and type of file

John - thanks for replying - the problem is that I don't even have a media folder in my c\windows - i just can't understand how it's disappeared. Last night I emptied my recycle bin without checking it, so if I had mistakenly deleted it a few days ago I can't get it back - but I'm pretty sure I haven't deleted anything spectacular for ages. My computer is a Packard Bell Platinum running Windows 98 - my wife has a packard bell i-media running windows ME. I wondered if I could make a folder 'Media in the windows section and copy her media files to mine - would that be OK???

Short answer, yes

they are only sound files so you can even download some wavs from the net and use them, if they are named different you might have to choose them again in your sound properties.

Thanks John - you've saved the day again - by the way - are you going to the Windermere Model Boat Rally next weekend?
