new traction engine build

Well after more delays for health and cold weather the latest builds under way.

Its a 2 inch to the foot agricultural due to it being a bit less hard work.

Horns are done tenders done cranks done front hubs and a load more bits. Just started hacking and bashing the boiler copper.

Iv posted about 60 pictures at the photobucket address if any ones interested. theres about four pages of pictures all in all.

Kevin, absolutely amazing the amount of work that goes into one of these. Do you also make your own castings? That's quite an art in itself.

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Hello Richard
Yes the castings are all done at home both gunmetal and iron. I use a charcoal blast and can melt about 5lbs a go in iron. Its a bit Heath Robinson given that the furnace is a hole in the ground lined with refractory bricks and clay and supplied with air from a broken Dyson vacuum cleaner. (best use for one in my opinion)

On this engine the cylinder block is being machined from a 5x5x5 inch cube of Meehanite cast iron so thats a casting i don't have to worry about thankfully.

Cheers Kevin

Hi Kevin,
a most impressive job you have done. I wonder about the hours needed to make such a model. I have seen several in the past in the Model Engineer magazine, but never so many and clear pictures.
Congratulations,

George

Hi
Not been here for a bit due to work and family.
Hours wise the 1 inch Minnie now stands at 3000 plus hours and the 2 inch to the foot somthing like 1900 hours.

The formers for teh tender were cut from 1/4 inch mild steel and backed up with 1 inch sq mild steel ribs. The boiler plates were all beaten over again mild steel mostly 1/4 inch and 3/8th inch. all cut with a hacksaw and a file (band saw was on a bad blade day).

Il post some pictures of the rolls for the rims later on. The rims were rolled from 1/4 inch x 1 3/8 th inch mils steel two rims to the wheel on the rear joined to form the T rings. rear hubs were in the end due to weather milled and filed from cast iron billet 5 inches in diameter.

Cheers Kevin
