Cup wheel fitted on 8" Bench Grinder

Can you fit a Cup Wheel to a standard 8" Bench Grinder to replace one of the grinding wheels? The type as fitted to cutter grinders to grind endmills etc?

I've never seen one fitted to a bench grinder, but it would simplify accurate grinding of drills and lathe tools to have a proper cup wheel and an additional tool rest set to the side of the wheel.

You can do what you want with your own gear.

Now here's the kicker, what does the manufacture of the wheel recommend for the RPM's for the cup wheel?

What are the RPM's of the 8 " bench grinder, are the wheel and grinder compatible?

If you do happen to mount the cup wheel, what sort of protective cover are you going to fit to the grinder?

Have you ever seen a grinding wheel explode?

If you have, then you will appreciate the fitted protective cover!

Is the 8 " grinder spindle and the centre of the cup wheel compatible or will you need a spacer?

Just a few things for you to think about.

Oh, by the way, I have seen a cup wheel fitted as you describe, it seemed to work rather well, it did conform/comply with the RPM's of the grinder though and it was protected too.

regards radish
