The man that the authorities have forgotton ?

It has taken an American,to realise the importance of saving the
memory of one of this countries greatest aircraft designers-
R.J.Mitchell,to this end millionaire Sidney Frank is donating a
large sum of money towards the setting up of a memorial fund in his
name, what the fund will be used for is not known at this early
stage ?,but it is certainly a move in the right direction.
Like many I believe that R.J.Mitchell should have received a
posthumous award years ago for his work on the Spitfire,it is an
insult to give awards to pop stars and the like, then forget a person
who saved this country from tyranny with a unique design that
evolved at just the right time in history.
Doctor Mitchell is delighted with the news of the fund but will
still strive to get R.J the award that he truly deserves, for the
sake of history this just must happen.

More forgotten pioneers,the Barnwell Brothers.

A news story in today`s Independent newspaper(thursday 28 Apl `05) drew my attention to "Scotland`s Answer to the Wright Brothers". Two people that I`m ashamed to say I`d never heard of. Worth a look. http://www.news.independent.co.uk/uk...p?story=633355

There was an article on the Barnwell Brothers on the news yesterday when they unveiled a memorial near Stirling to them. Apparently they were responsible for the design of the Blenheim bomber as well. The sons of the family all died during WW2 while members of the RAF

*** Now that name rang a bell with me,the Barnwell Bullet was I believe the Vickers ES.1,a tubby little biplane of 1914-18 vintage.
Somewhere I have a small drawing for this machine, will have to try and find it.
A fascinating story.
