| Aviation News-Why aircraft cost so much. http://www.airlaw.com/verdicts.htm
If you have ever wondered why aircraft cost so much then just read these few aviation claims, with the increase in specialised aviation public liabilty claims the manufacturers are having a really hard time, how much longer this can go on is anyones guess ? the people who used to chase ambulances are now turning their attention to more lucrative things,it really makes you realise how greedy the world has become.

| Barry,
One of my real pet hates is the way we are following the American claim culture. We have a continuous barrage of daytime adverts persuading us to make claims for everything we can think of to support the "No win no fee" parasite lawyers who generate the culture.
What people seem to forget is that everyone pays for this in the end as higher insurance premiums to support the greedy individuals who think they are onto an easy fortune and the lawyers who egg them on.
A classic example of this was the recent QM2 issue when, due to two missed ports, Cunard offerred a 50% reduction. Under the circumstances this was very generous and well over and above what they had to do but of course the greedy few generated enough publicity to get a full 100%.
Those greedy few will be the ones that put companies out of business in their persuit of unreasonable financial gain and everyone will then loose out.
I see this as a sad reflection of our incredibly selfish society that we are becoming and how far away from the war years we have come when the whole country pulled together. |

| *** Yes Richard,I did see that programme about the claims, you are quite right in what you say about the society we live in,everywhere you go these days it is health and safety orientated, that is alright but they have gone overboard with the issue, now we get 'Risk assessment' now for goodness sake how can you possibly assess a real risk ? accidents usually happen for a reason,it takes two to tango either you get someone jay walking across a road and a car driver slams on his brakes and they happen to fail,so does that mean that the person who fitted the brake pads was negligent ? it could have been a faulty set ok,but where do you stop in a situation like this ? it is just killing progress, everyone is afraid to stick their neck out just in case they get sued for something,I am all for safety but it seems to have got out of all proportion these days.
And yes I also agree with you about the war years,it seems that people have just forgot what our parents fought for all of those years ago,do we really have the freedom that they strived so hard to win for us ? in some ways yes, but in other ways the world lacks many things, total success is not born out of this greed for quick buck fortunes made by parasites, there just has to be a compromise, right thats it off my orange box and off to bed, goodnight everyone. | It is an even bigger problem in todays society that we feel embaressed about expressing a logical opinion. Scared of being branded an extremist.
Nothing at all wrong with your comments mr wonwinglo at all. And never be scared of living on the orange box. I prefer a tea chest myself, its higher.!!!!. I work for a nightclub company. One of our venues pays 50 grand a year in insurance after a couple of p****d people tripped on the carpet (or did they?) it really is open season for compensation lawyers.
I can forsee an advert for Compo lawyers in the future running something like this- "Got a cold? sniffing? sneezing? have you had to take time off work because you felt a bit cack?....YOU DESERVE COMPENSATION.
DID your friend sneeze near you? Did your mum cough near you? No win-No fee solicitOrs, we don't care where the pound of flesh comes from" |

| I think this whole claims culture is one of the saddest indications of the state of our selfish society today.
I totally agree with Barry it is now so rife that it is stiffling developement and the whole H&S philosophy has become a means of supporting claims rather than a sensible way of preventing people from getting hurt.
So many things I do at work is controlled by some sort of legislation, rule or guideline which is all designed to protect the company from a liability point of view. I daren't imagine where it is all going but at the moment no-one is doing anything to stop it so it can only continue to get worse before it gets any better. The money and resources that is wasted on protecting companies from claims could be so much better used to progress our society and make life better for everyone.
I think this all goes right to the root of the way we think nowadays though. We have been given more and more money in our pocket to the point where I think we actually have far too much disposable income yet we have crap health, education and police services etc. This is all because people want as much money in their pocket and no government seems to have the courage to do what is best for the country as a whole and would rather pander to generating votes.
I don't know about a soap box, I just feel like moving to the Outer Hebrides sometimes. |

| New Hebrides I think you mean....Outer Hebrides are still part of the UK and the previous applies there too, usualy caused by "white settlers" or "in-comers", "flatlanders", "mainlanders" etc. At least the "no-whistleing-on-the-Sabbath philosophy" people there are still fighting the rush. Property values is another modern curse and example of the modern "screw thy neighbour" trend. My most hated expression "I dont care". Heard everywhere, that is one that tends to come back and bite them in the arse . "Oh would some power the gift give us, to see ourselves as others see us, it would from many a foolish notion free us and even devotions." Robert Burns (translated from the Scots, Not Gaelic, pronounced gallick, Gale-ick is Irish). Rant over! PS. Favorite TV show.."Grumpy Old Men"

| ....I`m expecting a dawn raid at any moment by the men in black ! The Feds are already VERY interested in r/c in the U.S. Read some of the RPV/UAV sites. Frightening. The Kiwi amatuer that designed a civvy missile got rapped pretty quickly. It is now 5.15am and I`m heading for the mountains in about half an hour...not on the run but to clear the runs for the skiers ! No politics , no hassle, healthy folk having fun in the snow, crystal clear air...and I`m getting paid for doing this! I feel a couple of servo purchases coming on.

| I'm not so sure I could cope with a political section. My wife spends too much of her time trying to calm me down as it is!!
When I used to host tables in my Cunard days we were always strongly advised to avoid allowing the conversation to get around to religion, politics or sex.
The only time it all fell apart was when we inadvertantly got onto politics one night and it very nearly turned into a bit of a bun fight. |
