DeAgostini projects (BMW M3)

I would like to get into building RC cars & saw the ad's on TV for the new DeAgostini BMW M3 project. I thought that it seemed like a good way to get into it but according to the small print on the ad it takes 95 issues at £6.99 (???) each. That would be ~£665 & would take almost 2 years to build (assuming its out every week & I have my figures correct).

I found this site when trying to find out what the car is worth & it seems like some of you have a bad impression of the DeAgostini model collections. Is that right? What is the general opinion of them, their magazines, the quality of parts they supply etc....?

Also, what alternatives are there for someone who, like me, wants to get into model RC car building but can't spend hundreds on a kit & doesn't know where to start?

You also have to add the price of the controller to you figure, you could quite easily get that car or at least something similar for about £250 to £300, and as with a lot of DeAgostini stuff people tend to start running in to problems like missing issues etc..

The first r/c buggy I built was a Tamiya Super Fighter G kit and I found to instructions very easy to follow, that was an electric one and cost me about £130'ish if I remember right.

And I'm sure if you run in to problems there are plenty people here that will help you.

Have a look at www.modelsport.co.uk they have a great selection of electric and nitro cars, trucks and buggy's to choose from.

OK, just saw another thread related to this. It seems that the car is a BMW M3 GT TS-4N Pro V2 - I think. It is for sale at http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk for £239.99, fully assembled (does that mean I can get it cheaper, unassembled, elsewhere?) The spec, from their website, is below:

• 100% Factory assembled
• 2 channel radio installed
• Painted body
• Strong, fibreglass reinforced composite parts
• Super low centre of gravity
• Double foam air filter
• Metal bushings
• Steel drive cups and dog bones
• Roll over bar/ car handle
• Colour coated springs
• Triple belt, four wheel drive train
• Performance metal manifold & tuned pipe
• PRO 12BXS pull start engine
• Blue anodized chassis
• 2 speed system
• Metal shock absorbers
• Full ball bearings equipped

Is this good & what are the chances of the DeAgostini one being of the same standard, and not less?

Just to clear this up alittle the BMW M3 partworks isn't from DeAgostini but is the hachette partworks as they are doing the SKK truck i am building soon and first issue is 50p,second £3.99 and there after is £5.99,also that car can not be bought unassembled from any model shop and only as a RTR 'ready to run' car but other shops will sell it for £219 like modelsport.

If anyone did the week by week partworks the best way of getting it is to take an order out with your local newsagents and they will get each issue for you every week, but if you have the money to buy a car fully built i would say do that. But if you want a un-built nitro car there are other brands like HPI, tamiya and some others, and will cost less to buy whether built or not than the partworks.

I chose to do the hachette partworks truck because of money as what i get every fortnight i always need so paying a lump sum in one go wasn't an opition and i could afford to spend the £5.99 a week as i wouldn't miss that.

The car will be the same but will take long to build if you go the partworks way.

The car advertised will be the same quality, albeit i beleive there are one or two extras on the part by part build. such as working headlamps and chrome mirrors !
your right in your calculations at about £550-£600.
the same car can be bought for around £230, or about £100 on ebay second hand, unfortunately the cars are not available for self assembly.

there are plenty of available hopups for this car. they are quick enough for beginners ( and most regulars!) 2 speed gearbox (if it doesn`t come equipped with one), alloy parts etc etc .

IMHO buying new from a shop would be the best, cheapest and quickest way to owning one.

Adz..

hey don't buy this car if you plan to go anywhere with gravel, the belt will just get chewed up and it would be quite hard to get a replacement

Most model shops sell Thunder tiger parts for the BMW M3 TS-4N car and www.modelsport.co.uk sells some parts for the car online, also the car is brought out by hachette partworks and not DeAgostini.

What you really want for the BMW M3 is a nice large Tarmac car park with no speed ramps etc or if you are really lucky to have one near you, a proper model car track. Local schools are ideal too where they have tarmac pitches, they have never thrown us off this one yet coz they love the cars !!!
See Pics with Subaru on flyby...!!!
