| It depends on whether you want the model finished as a usable vehicle or as a concours entry.
I would always prefer the realistic optiion so I would avoid gloss on metallic finishes and use a combination of silver, gunmetal, metallic greys etc to simulate real metallic castings. Then a bit of shadow work and maybe dry brush a bit of carefull highlights and the engine will look very realistic.
I always used to do bike engines with metallic grey and gunmetal and then mix a bit of silver into them to use as dry brush medium. |

| Experiment first with scrap until you are happy to apply the paint to your model.
I would take great care with gloss on an engine as the danger could be that it ends up looking like a plastic toy. |

| not many ( if any ?) of teh components in teh engine area are polished to a shine finish, cam covers being cast show the rough crackle effect of teh cast finish, the exhausts are alloy more a satin finish and teh carbon covers on the cam covers tend to have more of a satin finish also .
have a look here for some inspiration http://www.seriouswheels.com/def/Fer...e-1280x960.htm

| here is the frame, all the right bits painted and the front suspension, brakes and a few little electric boxes mounted.
a little tip....if a Tamiya kit asks you to paint a piece that is already black with Semi-Gloss Black (xf-18....i think?) dont bother, it dries the exact colour and texture as the plastic so its a waste of time and paint. if there are other bit to paint other colours, do them and if you mess up a bit, just touch up with the xf-18. |

| here is the dividing section with window, engine and mufler all mounted to the frame.
another little tip. if you have a steady hand and a good brush, dont bother using tamiya masking seals they provide with kits to do the windows. They are a nice idea but they always curl up and a pain in the back-side to get on in the first place let-alone straight. then they are always a little to big, and no matter how much you press them down a little bit of paint will seep under them.
so, if you have a steady hand and a good brush, use them! |

| That's coming along very nicely Richard. I think you have enough differrent metallic finishes on the engine to keep the realism. |
