Hi all

My first time on this forum so hiya to you all.

I've just started out in modelling and would like a suggestion or two on what i should buy to race on grass. I have a local park that is accomidating as long as we keep to the grass and not the path's so are there any fast models that would be specifically built for that terrain ?

I tried my local model shop but they were not very helpful so i thought i'd ask the experts

Hi Jbon,

Firstly a very warm welcome to the Scale Models forum. I hope that yiou enjoy your time here, benefit from our extensive resources and contribute your own experiences.

As for your choice of car I am certainly not the expert here but I am sure that the guys in the know will offer thier advice later.

As with most competition modelling though it all depends on how much you want to spend. To start with I would have a look at off the shelf stuff from Tamiya or Kyosho, both of which manufacture models specifically for off-road use at reasonable prices. As you are competing in a local park I assume that you are looking at electric powered models so using a standard kit from either of these model manufacturers can then be upgraded at a later date with higher performance motors and battery packs.

for off roading i would get a nitro buggy/truggy, stadium truck, or a monster truck

hpi make good trucks and they are strong and spares are readily available for them

I would check first that nitro vehicles will be allowed in a public park.

I would be surprised if they are and you wouldn't want to go to a great deal of expense buying a car that you cannot use!

You will find that IC Engines are regularly not allowed in public spaces be they in aircraft or boat models so cars will certainly come under similar control.

Hi jbon,

You don't say if the model is to be a car or if it's just for your own enjoyment.
If you want to race then you need to look at the links posted above, if just for one-off fun, then a monster truck style may be more appropriate.

Another thing, check out the height of the grass, it may sound odd but once it gets longer that 14mm the racer style buggies will slow down quite a lot compared to tarmac racing, this should not effect the monster trucks.
