A New Magpie 90

I just finished yet another yacht! You guessed it, a Magpie 90!
In case you have nothing better to do, have a quick look at this brief build thread.

The hull I layed up a while ago for a buyer who changed his mind.
Here it’s getting the inwales fitted to attach the deck to.

Fitting the shaft and motor. What for you say? To push her when the wind has gone of course!

Camera fault! Fitting the woiks dat make her go!

Ballasting with melted lead in the sink.

Melting the lead on the stove.

Attaching the deck after having fitted the winch mounts, mast step etc.

Fairing her up ready for paint.

Testing her for trim etc with some sails I made earlier.

Painting the blue flake.

Airbrushing the magpie insignia on the back deck. This new parafilm masking is excellent. It stretches to 4 times and then self adheres and cuts with a hobby knife through the drafting film I use to trace the designs. Love it!

The magie is on.

Masking the ‘symbolic’ windows with Parafilm.

All done!

Masking the first side of flames to airbrush

I trace them with drafting film and transfer the shape to the other side.

I cut through the film to mark the parafilm underneath and then remove the part where the paint will go.

Lovely stuff Magpie, I'm looking forward to seeing her perform on the water.

I must admit I have never contemplated molten lead as ballast. I have always layed strip lead or steel in the bottom of the hull and locked it in by pouring resin over it.

I have always thought the hull would flex under such temperatures and the lead would deform as it shrinks with cooling. Obviously this did not affect your build so one to bear in mind in the future.

Yes Bunk, I always do it with the keel submerged to cool it. I've had no probs yet and it gets the weight at the lowest possible point with the help of gravity. You can float her in the tub and set the trim angle as you pour too. No trial and error needed.
