Hi and thanks to everyone who said hello after my first post. To Richard & Jim....I already had these links, thanks anyway. I also used to be a member of the Edinburgh Model Boat Club all those years ago. I actually got 2nd prize at the Scottish Champs for 'steering & docking' in 1993 ish.

Tech help question:
I'm trying at the moment to get the trawler Nordkap going but I'm having trouble either with the transmitter or receiver but I don't know which. If I move away from the model about 3ft I start getting 'jittery' servo movements. Any further than this and it all goes haywire!

Some years ago my youngest son broke the topmost portion off the transmitter aeriel, but I dont think it's that. (It's an old Futaba Attack SR 2 channel transmitter.) I opened the transmitter today out of interest as I have been able to turn the aeriel freely and wasn't sure if I should be able to do this. When I opened the case there was a small piece (1cm) of 'stranded' copper wire lying at the bottom of the case. There did not seem to be any attachment/wire to the bottom threaded portion of the aeriel! Am I getting warmer do you think? Should the aeriel be securely attached to something inside?

P.S. I used 'Pinkbike' to host my photos as that's what I normally use for my older son's MTB pics.

On the radio's I have the aeriel screws into a fitting inside the radio so you can remove it for easier transportation. Obviously it should be securely tightened into its socket if this is the case.

Either way the aeriel itself should be connected into your radio's circuitry probably via some thin copper wire. if you can identify that the aeriel is not connected then I would suggest that you have found the culprit. It is certainly behaving as though it is a communication issue.

Howdy Grant,

Well, I am by no means a R/C expert, I only have a 1:18th scale Panzer tank, but..........I too experienced the same trouble and it was that the wire that was attached to the screw "thingy"the aerial screws into, had broke. The tank acted just like you described but once I found the problem and repaired it, it worked fine.

Hi Grant,

What Richard and Greg have said is correct, it certaily sounds like your 'loose wire' should be connected to the aerial, if you let me see a photo of the inside of the set I might be able to be more positive.
Both aerials are 'tuned' to work at the supplied length, if you've lost the bit that got broken off it will affect the tranny's range.

Hi guys,

Re-checked the tranny and can't see anywhere where a wire from the bottom of the aeriel might have been attached/soldered to......

The aeriel seems to slot/clip into a metal bracket which is soldered to one of the 2 boards so maybe this should be all it needs.

I took some photos but they're really bad so they're not worth showing. I've also checked the receiver but there's nothing obvious so I think I'm just going to get a new set! (damn!)

Update - Bought new 2ch Futaba Attack and all works fine now. Just gotta sort out the battery position in the hull of the trawler as it lists at times due to battery movement.

secure with velcro maybe ?- sticky velcro is easily available, or try packing the battery with polystyrene blocks to prevent it shifting
