Revell H.M.S. Victory

Ello!!

My first post on here so sorry if i am in the wrong part for this lol. I am currently making a model of H.M.S. Victory for my nans birthday. I have been painting it since Wednesday night and still havent finished!!! Would anyone be able to tell me any hints or tips on building this model? Thank you for your time and help!! Tom!

Thanks for the link noobee captain!!! This is the first Ship i have made i normally made WRC cars. I have been looking at the colour scheme and i am a bit sceptical about them for instace... where the yellow meets the black. Is there a better colour to use then the yellow? and i am not too sure on the copper colour for the hull lol. Anyway Thanks again for your help!!! much appreciated Tom!

This probly doesn't help but... Imade the Airfix Victory (I do not recomend this kit to anyone but sadists) anyway the colors were a tad flamboyant during that period but the black and yello strips are correct, i don't know how to link to it but in bunkerbarge's gallery is some good quality piccys, i used these as well.

I would also recommend you buy a copy of the current special kit issue of Model Boats magazine which has an in depth review of the making of a Jotika model of the Victory. Obviously an entirely differrent kit but usefull for colour references nontheless.

The lower hull was definately copper coloured as it was clad with copper tiles, nailed onto the wooden hull.

ello!

I am just about to put the sails on my H.M.S Victory and i was just wondering is there anyway to weather them? instead of just leaving them white? I think weathering them would make it look better but thats if i can lol Thanks for your help in advance! Tom!

Yes I have built this kit too (a long time ago) but I think mine had plastic moulded sails, not sure what type they have in the kit now.

If they are cloth type...the easiest way I can think of getting that dirty stained look is Tea Stains...easy & cheap enough to do and if you do different dilutions of the tea for each sail you will get some darker than others, allow to dry out and then put them on.

I am sure many other tried and trusted methods will also appear on here so keep watching.

Just for the record Mark, this kit has plastic sails,(I thought they were banned under the Geneva Convention,lol) they too are invented by people saying,

Person 1 'let's do it like this and make it difficult,'

Person 2 'NO! Lets do it like this and make it bloody imposible!'

I think your best chance of getting some sort of realism from plastic sails would be a wash made from oil paints.

Maybe applied with a brush and then wiped with a rag afterwards. I bit of experimentation would be usefull before committing to the plastic sails but a wash can be cleaned off easily if you are not happy with it.
