had a chance to look at the Gato today found the following.
The bow and stern planes are the wrong profile, both are teardrop and should be basicaly flat.
Bow tube door are wrong according to the drawings (not looked at the stern tubes yet)
Marker bouys are oval should be round (not certain as these changed in the war years)
Bow bull ring is too small.
Anchor is in the wrong place and at the wrong angle. (could be OK for certain boats)

this all said there were so many incarnations of the gato some of these points could be mute.

Kevin the Fleetboat forum on the subcommittee website has loads of reference material for this class along with what needs to be done to the kit to correct some of the obvious problems.

Thanks Davie,
I do have a full set of hull drawings for the Gato I bought a few years ago.
Most of the bits on the Revell I think were missed out or left off to speed the model to the store shelf. The Revell Uboat althouh not perfect has a lot more detail and if memory serves took more time to go through prototype before release to us.

Over the next few weeks il transfer the ports and vents to sheets of brass shim so i can cut out or engrave the ones I think are most visible.

I think its a shame Revell lost the chance to turn this from a big hull into a big very impresive hull. But with the cost of toolmakers time even in China I can see why the detal was left off.
