1/200 Yamato Battleship

I recently got a 1/200 NICHIMO JAPANESE NAVY SUPER DREADNOUGHT BATTLESHIP HJIMS YAMATO. I havent started assembling the kit yet. I just wanted to know wether it would be alright to assemble it WITHOUT the PE. It isnt available here in the Philippines. Would the absence of the PE affect the general appearance and perspective view of the battleship when its done? Any advise/suggestion would be appreciated before I open the box. Thanks guys and happy holidays!

hi Gerry.

it all depends really, i have the tamiya 1/350 Musashi (the yamotos sister ship) on old at the moment, i have the p/e set for it and i think it makes a great difference. especially when it comes to all the hand rails.

yours will be bigger than mine so it might lack quite a bit of detail without it. but then again seeing as yours will be bigger it might be easy to scratch build things like railings.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your reply. I guess you're right. Seems logical enough. Why not scratch build the railings. I downloaded documentary photos from your gallery of the Musashi. I could use it as reference as the 2 ships are identical.

Gerry,
I,m new to this forum so I hope this makes it. I have the same kit and I am considering starting it this year some time. I have spent quit a bit of time researching the yamato. there is a 1/10 scale model located at the yamato museum at Kure city in Japan. there are photo's of it posted on the net. try and google it. great reference material.

Howdy Gerry, everyone,

I remembered looking at some photos of the yamato class battleships awhile back while admiring build threads over at: http://modelingmadness.com/kitindex/kitindexmain.htm which is basically a site dedicated to reviews of model builds. Not just ships, but aircraft, vehicles, space and sci-fi models etc...
well on the ships link there is a 1:350 scale Yamato and at the very bottom of that page was "references". Well that link doesnt work lol.
BUT all is not lost. Using the INTERNET ARCHIVE "WAYBACK MACHINE" ( http://www.archive.org/web/web.php ) I way able to input the unworking referenced link and was given many dates to chose from for that page that I could look at.
This "non-working page" through the magic of cyber-archiving" is suddenly alive again and can be found here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://...b08_Yamato.htm
Now i chose to look at the last available posting (oct 3rd, 2003) which gave me this link: http://web.archive.org/web/200310030...b08_Yamato.htm
(click this link to save time). It contains a wealth of info on the yamato class ships including pics.
I hope they are of some use to you in your build.

NOW......a special note. For anyone who has ever listed a site as a favorite and later found that the site is no longer available, I would suggest that you make INTERNET ARCHIVE "WAYBACK MACHINE" ( http://www.archive.org/web/web.php ) a favorite, it will be more help than you realize. And although it wont have every page listed, the times that it does find the page you are looking for will make saving it as a favorite well worth while.

Have a good evening everyone,

Greg aka GW
