Lightbulb Uses for a reed switch?

A question for all of you electricians and knowledgable people out there - What is a reed switch and how would I use one in a boat?

a reed switch is a small switch, that when a magnet is brought very near it`s vicinitythe switch closes and completes a circuit. could be used for switching your rc eqipment on and off, by moving a magnet near it on teh deck for example.

is basically a switch, operated by a magnetic field.
