That looks like it's made from a sheet of flat metal which must be bent and folded to shape. That could have a lot of sharp edges depending on the manufacturing quality. I'd think that could be a bit hazardous to your lad's fingers.

Ive seen similar in trains and planes, i think its photo etch which extremely thin and very sharp also not very forgiving if bent wrong( so you would probably only get one shot at bending it right) imho i would think not (always best to er on the side of safety)

I wonder how many of us cut fingers and skinned knuckles on Meccano when we were kids, I know I did. :D
