      Advice? Which filler and varnish?

      Hi all,

I am another returnee after 20 years away from modelling.

I am a bit out of date with the latest best practice so will have many questions... my first 2 are:

      1. Which filler do you guys recommend these days?

      2. Which varnishes work best? Do you always gloss varnish over your paintwork for decaling or do you use things like Humbrol decal cote?

      Thanks for the advice,
      Daz

Hi darren, welcome to the forum. Most people on here use a gloss coat before decalling, it helps to minimise the silvering effect caused by tiny air bubbles getting trapped under the decal. This is far more likely if the surface is rough (ie unvarnished matt ) so the shinier the better before decalling, after drying of course you can give a final coat of matt, satin or whatever to seal the decals in and give the desired finish. As for varnish ,its horses for courses really but i know Vallejo varnishes are very good and theres the added bonus that you can get them from our very own forum shop!! As for filler ,again theres quite a few , squadron green stuff is one of my usual ones plus humbrol and ive heard very good things about the tamiya filler and all in the forum shop too!hope this helps , im sure everyone else will chip in with their take on it too , cheers tony

      Hi Daz,

      Welcome to the forum.

I've not long returned to modeling and I use "klear"-"Future"-"Johnsons floor wax" (depends on where you are in the world what you call it) to provide a glossy surface prior to applying decals. Still getting the hang of it as I brush paint and it is very thin.

But theres loads of advice on this forum about it.

      Have fun.

      Tony.
