      New "kid" on the block

      Hello folks,

Wanted to tip my hat to you all as one of the latest people to join your forums.

As a kid (late 70's) was into Airfix 1/76 aircraft and Matchbox 1/32 figures. I guess I enjoyed playing solders so much that was why I spent 1989-late 2011 in the British Army. Now that fixation is over I am going through a mid-life crisis and had a hankering to go back to making models. Have spent a disturbing amount of time over the past 2 weeks lurking on this and similar forums admiring the skill of those on here and hoping to have a crack at making a decent stab at my own wee WWII vignette.

Have received a Tamiya 1/35 Panther G and a set of German Tank Riders (Lorraine 1944) from Xmas. and I want to try and scratch build as much of the scenery as possible as I have come to realise that buying already built accessories can cost quite a bit. looking at the dioramas on here has given me me the inspiration to scratch build - rationale is that if I make a complete b@ll@cks of it at least it won't cost the earth.

Am currently trawling the internet looking for some historical context in which to set the vignette - am thinking maybe elements of 12th HJ Pz Grenadier Div in Normandy. This is only becuase from the picture of the panzer riders' box they appear to be in temperate uniforms. Maybe I'm being too simplistic but as this is my first crack in over 25 years I'd thought I'd try to keep it relatively simple (though I still want to preserve historical accuracy where possible).

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated - especially on the camouflague scheme (I do not have an airbrush)

      Regards,
      Mac

Welcome to the forum Mac and don't worry about making an @ss of it. We all do it from time to time and everything you can do wrong you can learn from. The most important thing is to enjoy making it.

If you need any help with anything then just ask away or/and use the search facility on the forum

A warm welcome from me too Mac.

Allyne has said it all really...
So I will just add, that the lads on here are really friendly and only too willing to offer help and advise, so build away, don't get too ambitious to start with, do your best and learn as you go. If you do make a mistake, laugh at yourself, learn from it and have another go. Never bin anything, just reprime, whatever, and start again!

I notice you don't have an airbrush, I don't either so I suggest you stick with your brushes for now until you are happy that your modelling skills have returned! lol
There is always a lively, friendly and ongoing debate on here as to the pros and cons of A/B's versus brushes, and the type of paints ect..
My personal preference for brush work is Vallejo Model Colour (Thinned with water) They always give me good results.

I'm sure the guys here will give you all the advise you will need, just ask.

Most important of all, have fun, it's just a hobby after all!
      Cheers,
      Ron

yes, a very warm welcome from me too, i regularly make an ass of things and it seems to me that modellers are more SELF critical than most. i am never really happy with most of my build all though everyone else thinks they are good. have lots of fun. i really got back into the hobby about a year or so ago and you will surprised how fast you improve.

Couldn't agree more! In my opinion the enjoyment that the hobby brings is just as important as the quality of the finished product.
