NEW-B Hello! Mogogear Here!

Hello all- So very new here - so first post... I can't even claim I am a modeler- I mostly frequent the "Unofficial Mamod Steam" forum a bit as I am a live steam nut and really preferemy steam engines to be in boats!!. I have not really built a model since I was a much younger pup, But the live steam application in boats is feeding a need in me to work with my hands to keep me sane ( I am in sales!!) I mostly buy derelict old boats etc and rebuild them, or repair them or re-work them or restore them. I also adapt hulls to be steam capable when they were not originally ever made so.... I think I Am just too daunted to do a kit build for now.

I have a older plank on frame Midwest Sequin Tug that was built by a fellow to just sit on a mantle, another plank on frame old hand built Coast Guard boat boat( 34") ( morphing into a English style Steam launch), a Bowman Snipe and a few other kit boats that are slowly becoming steam launches tugs or the like. Since steam boats are not a part of the culture here in the states- I look to the UK for information and moral support A LOT!!..

I hope to begin my learning on how to make [arts and changes to my boats here. How to plank decks and gratings - repair damages from past owners etc. How far I progress into "TRUE" modeling remains to be seen. I admire all of you and are humbled by the models you turn out. My main goal is to get boats out on the water and underway with steam. I hope that I can make them look good, watertight and personalized to some degree.

So watch out for my crazy questions...and pardon my hurried fist post -- grammatically I am distracted today!

Cheers from Portland

Hi Greg
Welcome to the forum - i'm into sailing ships - scratch build, I made a deck grating, which in time [at the minimum wage] cost a fortune haha. I found a a site in the U.S.
that sell the pieces for about 4$ - but that wouldn't be the same interest for me - I did it using cross halving method - i'm in the process of makiing another grating at the moment, strips across and cutting small pieces to glue in to form the squres, I still can't decide which method I prefer

Thanks Peter and Alan!! I just bought a hobby lathe today- I don't know anything about them past using one in High school a little. but I need to make some parts so I thought I would increase my learning curve!!! I grabbed an SL 1000 Unimat with a full boat of accessories!! A dirt cheap price to boot- life is good!!

Thanks again for the welcome

Hi Greg
I got a lathe a few months ago - no experience, other than turning a poker handle at school 50 years ago!! - recently finished 32 cannons for my frigate, repeating the same exercise gave me confidence but it's soooo boring

For a beginner to lathe work, making 32 of the same part is very off putting! Nice job on those though! Machine tools can get very expensive though as it's more a case of what do I need to buy to do xyz, than actually being able to get on with it.
