hello and some thoughts on "weathering"

Hi all
I have gleaned some useful information from various threads on this site, so I thought I
might put in my two bobs worth.
I have built aircraft models on and off for many years and like most of you have experimented with all sorts of techniques to achieve a nice weathered and used look on my models.
I am about to start Fishers Sea Fury and my mother has asked me if I could build it as one of my late father's aircraft.(He flew Furies with 801 Sqdn. FAA in the early fifties).
When I agreed she produced various photo albums with literally dozens of pictures of sea Furies at air stations in the UK,in Norway, at Halfar (Malta) and on an as yet unidentified aircraft carrier. (I need to go througth his log books for that one!)
My point about "weathering" is that in every single photograph the aircraft look like they have just come out of the paint shop, or at the very least have had a good wash!! I can discern some slight exhaust stains but that is about it.
Now I know this is the navy in peace time and these are not late war Luftwaffe aircraft that have been abandoned in a field for weeks but I do wonder if I may have been achieving a nice artistic and scale effect at the expense of realism.
I'm almost scared to emphasise panel lines!
I think a very subtle approach will be recquired.
