Hello from sunny Caversham

Hello all,

just joined this forum and I thought I'd introduce myself and ask a few (very very) basic questions.

I'm Carl, 45, married for 19 years, two children, living in Caversham, Berkshire, broadcast R&D engineer (Sony). As a young lad I used to fritter away all of my pocket money and paper round money on Airfix models and paint! I did this up until the age of about 14 when other things (punk, girls, beer ) conspired to divert my attention away from modeling. However I still remember many happy hours working on the 1/24 Spitfire, 1/24 Harrier and various other smaller models (one I loved but I can't remember the name of was a small Airfix bi-plane that on the box lid indicated that it was used for picking up spies in WWII - very exciting to a young lad ) I also remember making the huge Saturn V rocket.

After a break of about 30 years I'm very keen to get back into modeling but where to start? This is where the questions begin...

I think I'd like to try my hand at some ship or submarine modeling, but

1. What scale should I go for? I'm about thirty years out of practice!

2. What manufacturers should I be looking at for the best kits? Airfix (are they still around)? Revell? Tamiya?

3. What tools should I equip myself with? I remember doing kits with nail scissors and mum's emery boards, but I'm sure I can now afford something a bit better. Air-brush? Paints? Any hints greatfully received. I can afford a bit more than pocket money prices nowadays

4. Any on-line shops that people would recommend for both models and tools and paints?

5. Any simple beginners (or re-starters) guides to the best way of getting the best results from your kit build? I remember rushing home with a new kit gluing it all together and they painting quickly - but I'm sure this is far from optimal.

that's it for now I think

As I say any advice would be great!

Carl

Hi Carl
Welcome to the forum, the aircraft I remember for picking up spies was the Lysander, not much help I'm afraid with kits, I like to scratch build sailing ships but I'm sure you will get plenty of advice
