Newbie - Railway Technical Centre, Derby fan

Hi everyone,

Frank Warner - new member

I am a collector (4mm) who wants to develop my modelling skills so that I can produce some of the strangest and unique vehicles that came out of the Railway Technical Centre (RTC) in Derby.

I have been commissioning other modellers in the past to make these for me but feel I should start doing the work myself.

Images of the models made by Shane Wilton for me can be found here.

Although my modelling skills are limited I want to make a start this year to produce some of the one off vehicles of the RTC. I've purchase the Laboratory 9 Hydra kit from DC Kits and I'm purchasing all the extra bits I need to build this. The instructions seem clear and it looks to be an easy task. However if there is anyone who has modelled this kit and can offer any pointers - please do.

I've also collected a few brass side kits from Hurst but I have no knowledge of brass apart from it's a metal.

Before I start asking too many questions I'll look through your archives first for answers but will come back to annoy, fascinate and beguile members over the coming months.
Cheers, Frank

Hi Frank and welcome to the forum. I agree it's well worth a good look through the archives first as there is quite an amount of usefull guidance already there.

Your project certainly sounds interesting and should produce some very unique scratch built models. A diorama of the railway sheds would make a superb model incorporating some of the unusual rolling stock.

Thanks for that, you're right a good diorama would be the cream on the cake.

Cheers
