Hi from 602 in UK

Hi,

To introduce myself...John Williams, but I sign as 602, which is the "last three" of my old RAF number. (That's so I can recognise my own mail -there are too many Johns in the world). Born shortly before WW2. Live in South Wales, UK, but am also renovating a cottage in France. I've been playing with, and rebuilding old Land Rovers since 1972, but my wife insists that I find a sedentary hobby.....no more new chassis, and definitly mustn't build any more houses. I retired at 45, needed something to pass the time.

I considered building a model aircraft, but was discouraged by the sheer cost, and timescale of learning to fly. The challenge was in the building, but saw no point in just hanging it from my bedroom ceiling when finished.

I am now looking into building a vehicle that I have owned in my youth, either an Austin 7 from 1932, or a Dougles mototcycle from 1936. But where do I find plans, or even a real machine to measure up from?

John Williams (but 602 in future)

Hello, 602!
I'm very interested in old motorcycles and am currently rebuilding a 1956 BSA B31. I also ride an A10. I used to own an Airportable Landrover (lightweight) I loved it, but glad I don't run it now, not with fuel costing what it does!
Sorry I haven't got a duggie for you to measure up, but if you contact your nearest vintage motorcycle club section someone will know will have one and will probably let you check theirs out.

The Vintage Motor Cycle Club Limited
say's that the south wales section meets every other Monday at 7.30pm
Venue The Llanharry Working Mens Club , Llanharry, Nr Pontyclun, CF72 9HS

Hope thats been of some help.

Rob

Your douglas would cost a little bit more than £2 now
When I first got into british bikes, they could be had for very little money (early eighties) But I was still at school and had no money at all. My Dad bought me a triumph tiger cub. I can't remember how much it was, but it wouldn't have been more than £200 . Now they go for nearer £1200. You could pick up good running twins (norton/triumph/bsa) for around 5/600 quid not the 3-6 grand they go for now. Even vincents weren't mega money by todays standards.
