Camouflage painting and airbrushes
25 Jul, 2008 - 11:49 AM - by Tinderstick
Is airbrush a must, when you find yourself dealing with a camouflage pattern on a tank, aircraft, etc.? Can the same effect be achieved with a brush, too?

I assume it depends on the particular AFV/uniform/fighter colour scheme that you are aiming for; probably an SS Oak B pattern or any other WW2-era digital looking camouflage is easier to do with an airbrush?

Also -- forgive my ignorance -- but English isn't my native language, and I am having a hard time understanding the painting technique that you guys call a "wash". What exactly is a wash and what good is it for? I guess it is used for achieving a weathered look for your model?

Thanks,

T.

Newcomer asks for help!
24 Jul, 2008 - 9:48 PM - by Tinderstick
Ok, so I am not even sure whether this is the correct forum to post my request, but still...

I'd be glad if someone could point me in the right direction about painting scale models, give me a few preferably-beginner-friendly links to modeling websites, or the name of even a book or two. I bought a Revell Spitfire Mark V last week (my very first proper scale model), and am itching to get started, but I've also told myself to take it slow at first and do my best to screw up as little as possible. I have done some googling on my own, but that only caused more confusion.

So... anything you have on painting techniques, paint types, etc.?

Thanks,

T.

Should I use a Primer
24 Jul, 2008 - 5:09 PM - by RobMc
Hello all. I'm kinda at a dilema as to wether I should use a primer paint before building. I've heard I should use a primer (ie a flat white on grey styrene) so that the colours of the model will show better. But I've also heard that simply washing the parts in a mild detergent and painting should be enough. I have everything in hand to start my model, except for the primer, and as you all can probably attest to the anticipation of starting the build seems to far out weigh any reasonable thought!

If there is anyone out there that can help me decide...please do!

DIY Sound Generator for model boat is working!
24 Jul, 2008 - 4:40 PM - by Trevortheweather
Thought I’d share with you my recent attempt at getting some sound effects onto my model boat. After researching the available sound generation systems and finding they don’t exist or are rather expensive I thought I’d try to cobble together something from the kit I had lying around the house.
The core of my DIY sound generator is an MP3 player which I use to store sounds I have downloaded from the internet. A ready source of sounds from boats, planes, cars, etc is the www.YouTube.com site (using the search facility will normally find an example of what you want in a few seconds).
The other part of my sound generator is the X-mini capsule speaker which despite its small size delivers a big sound with lots of bass and is as far away from tinny as you can get. The X-mini comes with a USB connector (for recharging purposes) and a normal earpiece size connector to link to the MP3 player. A picture of the above items is... [Read More]

» Posting on the forum
Every now and again I get an email from someone who has joined yet can't workout how to post, I thought for every person that emails me there's probably several that haven’t and have not posted and not come back, which is a great loss, so this is a quick beginners guide to posting on the forum.

There are several ways but with out complicating things these are the easiest on the main page of the forum you will see a listing of each forum available you will also notice that there are 2 small icons near the middle of the page, one is a magnifying glass the other is like a notepad icon, if you press that on the forum you would like to post in it will go straight to the post editor box

All you need to do is put in your title. Type your message and press the Submit New Thread button, it's that easy

To reply to a post there are a couple of way of doing this.

Just above the fist post and just below the last one is a Post Reply button, that will take you in to the full screen editor the same as post new thread, or you can use the Quick Reply box, this one's even easier, type your message and submit it and finally there is the quote post button, that shows at the bottom of every persons post, it enables you to quote a post in your reply.

Hope this has helped, if not let me know and I will expand this
