Many historic airfields in the UK are in decline,the horror story behind the airship sheds at Cardington where vandals have ripped panels from the sides of the hangar,this is supposed to be a listed building and as such protected.

Airfield Control Towers of WW2 (A of A-Z)

Ths above might be of interest.

The Dallachy site now has a waste recycling unit on one of the main runways. Considerable damage was done to it by the building of the recycling unit. Part of the perimeter of the airfield is used by the Dallachy Aeromodellers. Car and motorcycle people used the site as well. Now thier use is restricted, so more hassle on the public roads as people gets thier adrenaline fix another way.

Had this been a building rather than a site I am sure a preservation order would have been placed on it. H... even ancient roman stuff gets better protected.

Nobody prepared to save our heritage,and so the vandals move in,the historic control tower at Enstone used by druggies,the farmer got fed up so he demolished the building,lost forever.
The hangars at Cardington will no doubt get into such a bad state and become dangerous,then health and safety will move in and condem them,if that happens then a very important part of our aviation history will be lost forever,every time that I drive past those hangars my heart warms,because to me they represent the great pioneer days of airships,we really will loose a rich piece of history if the inevitable happens.

I fully agree about our loved airfields,My Partner is rebuilding/Fetching back to life xs186 Jet-Provost I love it it is amazing what it looks like now to how it looked when they fetched it... here is the link to all the up-dated from beginning to now,and its still on going then he has his Auster to start on.... Ritz,XS186 was at North Luffenham with the Royal Air Force Explosives Ordnance Disposal unit,how long have you had it ? quite a project there.
Also did you know that we have a picture here on this site of your very Jet Provost XS186,here it is when in service with the R.A.F in silver finish with scotchcowl dayglo panels ?-

Northweald Airfield just down the road from me has often been looked at for a possible site to develop. I find it odd how residents complain about aircraft noise during an anual airshow, the alternative is that the site is used for retail parks, low cost housing etc.

There have been a few years where the airshow for whatever reasons hasn't gone ahead. It's also a worry recently when there were a spell of WW2 Restored aircraft having accidents and this would be another reason for the developers to move in, on safety grounds.

The airshows used to be great, with ample pyrotechnics too. I always used to sit on the fence by the road (as opposed to paying) as it's right at the end of the runway and remember terrific views of the aircraft as they flew past overhead.

Hiya,
we have been working on the jet prov for about 2 years now. it belongs to my good mate Paul Flynn and i am part of the restoration crew. we have seen that pic before thanks, Paul found it whilst browsing for info on her some time ago. the first pic on Ritz link was taken at North Luffenham (not my copyright btw though the others are but the good folks here are open to use them as they wish (though please give credit where due). i have spent the day today working on the prov and we have been rigging the tailplane/elevators and fin/rudder controls, my project (which i have mentioned in my first post here) is Auster AOP VI VF519 G-ASYN, she if far from completion as i have not long since purchased her and am at the parts and info gathering stage. well, i'd better stop rambling as i can talk aircraft all day if you let me. if anyone wants more info on these two projects then please feel free to e-mail me.

That reminds me of the hangars at RAF Felixstowe which was once the 'Farnborough' for flying boats and seaplanes. I lived in Felixstowe the end of the 50's and remember the hangars well. I was very saddened when I saw the photos of them being torn down.

I have walked a few disused ex-WWII airfields such as Holmsley South, Tarrant Rushton and Woolfox Lodge and, to be honest, found it a bit depressing. Tarrant Rushton is covered in pig pens and a far cry from the photos of neatly lined up Halifaxes and Horsas on D-Day. Last week I was on vacation on Crete and took a look at Maleme, which was an RAF airfield with Blenheims before the Germans invaded. It is still an airfield.

Two years ago I flew into Singapore International Airport. 50 years almost to the day that I last was there ! I was surprised to see that what was once 'RAF Changi' was still there on the opposite side of the runway from the commercial terminals. I remember it from 1955 with a neat line up of Lincolns, Canberras, Pembrokes etc now replaced by aircraft of the Singapore Air Force. Otherwise it looked just the same as 50 years previously !
