      Suzuki RG250 Gamma

This is a Revell 1/12 scale offering and a kit I chose to build up for a friends xmas present as this was his first motorbike, I’ve styled it on his machine with the appropriate colours and accessories and added his registration too.

Initial thoughts, the kits nicely detailed but the plastic I found very brittle compared to most styrene kits, as a result a few parts were snapped and had to be repaired along the way. Fit was a bit tight in places too, like the rear swinging arm into the frame and though it has a live active suspension system, front and rear, by the time it’s all fitted in theres just no room for movement and the front forks were very flimsy too.

However, that aside it was an enjoyable build and my first candidate for Alclad II Chrome.

      Engine assembled and primed:

Exhausts primed and filled with Milliput to hide the big slot in the moulded rear, this was then sanded to shape before spraying Satin black with a satin varnish top coat which gave it just the right sheen, (kit specified gloss black but this was far too gloss for exhaust black)

Fairing and sidepanel / tank assembly being glued

      Exhaust and engine painted

Engine detailed with coolant hose and spark plugs

Fork Stanchions in Alclad II Chrome

      Drive chain and guard

Basic frame assembly with engine in place

      Swingarm

      Tank, painted and decaled

Frame with swingarm and rear wheel

      Engine in frame with plumbing

Now, this one represents the blue ‘Tyreflys’ that he had fitted, for those thinking, ‘what?’, they are a valve cap with a flashing coloured LED top and a motion operated pressure switch, once the wheel begins to rotate the switch activates and the LED’s flash at one second intervals giving you a really nice rotational coloured flash, (great visibility aid at night too)

Clocks and idiot lights, (kit instructions give incorrect colour call outs for the lights)

Front fork assembly with Chrome stanchions, aluminium legs and detailing

      Front tyrefly closeup

Finally, the completed, finished model, overall I’m quite pleased though there are areas which the photographs have highlighted I’d have liked better but I’m quite pleased and hopefully he’ll appreciate it. Just got to figure out how to package it safely!

If your mate doesn't like that - take him outside and shoot him! That's a smashing piece of work.

      Thankyou very much.
I'm sure he will, When I showed my missis she said, 'that's exactly how I remember it, but cleaner', which made me chuckle some, he never was one for too much spit and polish.
If he doesn't like it I could give it a heavy sludge wash

Just noticed, it's chopped a bit of the side pics, that's annoying, I'd sized them at 800 pixels wide where all the others are 600, I wonder if this new fangled doodah has a width restriction on images?

This is the Tamiya offerring that I completed years ago. It would have been interesting to compare the two side by side but they look very similar with the Tamiya one being in a Japanese version of the colour scheme.

Mine was done long before the days of me having spray gear so it is all hand painted with Tamiya acrylics. The dark blue was a swine to paint on the bodywork but I got there in the end.

Nice, that seat and rear light is in fact more accurate than the Revell model I've built, I never even knew Tamiya had done one, the seat on Tony's RG was a Blue split unit too so that would have been perfect, however, it's close enough.

Hmmmm, Might have to keep an eye out for one of those, maybe a birthday or next xmas addition

Nice job hand painting with Acrylics BTW

Haven't seen one of those for a while and then two nice ones come along at the same time.
Showing my age here but what make were the tyres that came factory fitted to the first RG250s around,I guess, the late '70s? We called them "Nip on Nip offs" and changed them asap.

Hmm, not sure, I thought they came with Michelins as stock?
By the mid / late 70's the Jap machines were really taking hold and typically the first thing main dealers did was swap the rubber for decent stuff, (usually Michelin)

They probably did. I do remember some which were bought with some horrible Japanese tyre on (hence the name). My brother had one such machine around this time and I nearly binned it the first time I rode it. He didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with the tyres but then he went on to become a policeman lol.
Your model definitely stirred a few memories,as well as being a beautifully executed model which has certainly added to my enjoyment of it.
