*** Well the first thing is to forget those cheap brushes that they sell in model shops, got to your local art shop and invest in a couple of decent brushes that if looked after will last you a long time, what you need is a flat watercolour brush made from Oxhair, get one half inch, and one three eights of an inch wide, these will give you a good range of applications and you will be able to lay on the paint evenly and smoothly, once you have finished painting rinse the brushes out in thinners, then rub some soap in the palm of your hand and swish the brush around, just watch the colour come out of the bristles, that would accumalate and destroy the brush very quickly, once dry get a small piece of kitchen silver foil and carefully wrap the bristles until you use the brush next time, this keeps the bristles in shape, look after your brushes like this and you will get a decent finish, they are your tools so look after them.
Before you commence painting you must make sure there is no dust on the surface of your model,a piece of dust will look like a blot on the landscape if not removed,to do this get a piece of lint free material and lightly dab onto it some clear varnish, not much,go easy ! this makes what is called a 'Tack cloth' when you rub it gently on the surface it will pick up tiny particles of debris which would spoil your finish.
Now you are ready to paint, use a dust free place, daft as it seems the bathroom is ideal, but get mums permission first as I dont want her chasing me ! lay a piece of board across the bath and lay out your model, paints, brushes, clothes and a stirring stick for your tins of paint, dont change the colour of the bath either, the rest is up to you, work slowly and carefully, make sure that you get into all of those small corners first, then work up to the edge with your larger brush, dont attempt to do the whole model in one go,start with the fuselage, let that dry and next day do the wings and tail, use the lighter colours first, and add the darker colours as required.
Finally clean up all of your brushes as described above, while the model dries place a large cardboard box over the model, this will keep out dust, flies etc you just cannot be too careful, anything will spoil a good paintjob.
Follow the above and you stand a good chance of getting a really good finish, air brushes are not the only answer for painting models they come later with experience, and lots of it ! so get painting and report back here with your model,we are looking forward to you showing us old uns up,best of luck !

*** Yes I know what you mean, get a bottle of white spirit from your hardware shop ( not sure what you call them over in the States) use this for thinning enamel and cleaning brushes,it will do fine for brush painting and is cheap, the decent brushes will not be cheap even more reason to look after them,if you can only afford the one then go for the three eighths one first to get you going,I dont want you to be bankrupted.

thats the only image of the early type i can find
*** Basically gloss white overall, allow this to dry out for two days minimum, then paint the gosss post office/imsignia red wings, deck is a royal blue, anti dazzle panel on nose upper is matt black.
Rather than use masking tape which is a bit harsh unless the plastic is really grease free, use Humbrol masking fluid, this is a thin latex material that rolls off easily leaving a nice clean line to the two paint colours, the reason for makinng sure the under painting is completely dry is that if done too quick the top coat will dissolve your work.
Actually I would use matt white first, then gloss red, blue etc finishing off with an overall coat of Johnsons Klear on top of everything which will give a nice shine, further coats get more glossy, you can get a large bottle of this at your local supermarket on the floor polishes section, better by far than any varnish and it does not go yellow with age.
As you are probably now realising in painting models there is a lot more to it than most people think,a lot is about patience and trial and error, hopefully we will have taken a lot of the latter away to assist you.Dont forhet to take some pictures, thank you.
