Tamiya Gunmetal is X-10 and Metallic grey is XF-56, both of which would look good as a paint for hand weapons , depending on whether you wanted a slightly more gloss finish or a matt finish. I would usually go with the gunmetal.

If you mixed in a small amount of silver to which ever one you used and then dry brushed that over the top the effect is very impressive and the item really does look metallic.

Hi
Gunmetal is brass in colour. Gun barrels and actions are blued steel or Parkarised steel. Some of the more modern weapons are anodized aluminum.
Blued steel looks black or a very deep blue. Parkerised is a matt'ush black new and goes a little gray in time. I had a Remington Rand 1911 auto (the real thing) that was 44 issue and that had gone a little gray.

Gun metal as I say is a bronze alloy, and looks like brass great for bearings but no good for gun barrels.

I think in this context "Gunmetal" is used to refer to the shade of grey.

I'm not sure when they actually stopped using Gunmetal to make guns / cannon etc though?

Gun metal was never used to make cannon barrels, it would come appart faster than an actor with a zitt. bronze was used but it has very different mechanical properties.

Gunmetal is a form of Bronze - an alloy of copper, tin and zinc.

It was specifically used for cannon - hence the "gun" part of gunmetal.

Tamiya X10 can be a bit too glossy for me sometimes. I like humbrol 53 drybrushed with some 56 and some matt black in the right places does the job.
