Vallejo paint

Hi all
Just done a couple of searches on the forum for using water colours including Vallejo and Citidel paint (games workshop) and they seem more with brushing I have tried Airbrushing and had a lot of problems with clogging but it seems more of the paint drying very quickly in the airbrush even with Vallejo Air which my understanding needs not to be thinned any tips, ideas if youv'e used them

I use Vallejo paints and have very mixed results with air brushing, I can't find a happy medium with thinning it, it's either too thick or I have to water it down that much to get it to spray it's then too thin, I too would like some ideas on how to get the best out of these paints, for painting they are great but spraying seems to be a bit of a nightmare.

Vallejo paints also have the Air series which I believe has no need for thinner as it is already mixed for AB. Is this what you're using? My LHS carry s them and I was dying to try them out.

Vallejo paints also have the Air series
they're the one's also it wasn't a hot day so the airflow would'nt be to warm the only other thing I was using a Fine needle do you think that would contribute to the problems

Tony, I'm not sure as I've not used them myself. I've just read glowing reports about em and would like to try them out a bit in the future. What's your PSI and thickness? Is it watery or thicker like say milk?

Helo Jeff

I have tried different pressures from about 8-20 psi with the same results exept at higher psi I get loads of 'spiders webs' if you know what I mean
the only thing I didn't try was a bigger needle (Badger 175 as it comes with a fine/med/large needle) this is because I was looking for narrow lines the prob is also there with 'Vallejo Air' so as I said I sure these come ready for spraying
I also did a site search and I think it was Alan2525 posted some time back about the difficulty in thinning Water colours.
In that the pigment sperates quite badly
I did try thinning and all I got was a very poor metalflake effect ie loads of spots of pigment (might be worth experimenting later on for a SCiFi cammo pattern)
but not the look I was after
Also like a lot of things its worth trying for yourself and if it works for you please let me know.
I am not going to give up on watercolours as the effects can be very subtle also going to try some Acrylic Inks from Stationers and Art shops and I found a Lady modeler using Nail Varnish on a 'Mech' somewhere on Youtube that might have some uses for High Gloss paint jobs
Sorry to go on I can't stop typing to day

I know what you mean! Well, I've only used Testors MM enamels and Tamiya acrylics with great success. BUT I only now use the manufactures thinner and nothing else. The only time I've gotten cob webs shot out of the brush, its when I used laquer thinner as an alternative to the proper thinner. Its really hot so the thinner drys the paint as it leaves the brush. BTW-I'm on vacation and I'm still on the forums. If you don't hear back from me its because my Wife has thrown the hotel lobby chair at my head

Hi Tony,

I've not tried the Citadel collection but use Vallejo a lot. Their normal range I airbrush at around 12-15psi, thinned about 25-30% with Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner.

As for their Model Air range I have only tried the metallics without any success, always clogged the brush and 'globbed' off the nozzle when spraying, nightmare to clean up!

HTH

I used model air black without issue, just played about with the pressure until i got decent results. It's pretty much thinned perfectly, although dries with an eggshell finish, not strictly dead flat.
