First ever model, nearly de-cal time, any tips appreciated.

Any tiop tips for adding the de-cal on this F16 would be much appreciated, have been using the nosecone to hold it whilst painting so ignore the finish on that but main body is ready for matt varnish then the de-cals.

Paint is vallejo grey, seems a better choice than the Revell, although can still see some brush strokes.

Hi jason , welcome to the forum. The best method for the decals is to first give the model a coat of gloss varnish , then when dry , apply the decals -the smooth surface helps to stop silvering, caused by air getting trapped under the decal on a matt surface. Then after the decals have dried you can give it a coat of matt varnish to get the final finish and also seal in the decals. hope this is helpful, cheers tony

Hi and welcome Jason. I'd just like to reinforce what Tony said. Decalling on a gloss surface will give a much better result.

It is also a good idea to soften the decals with a coat of a product such as Micro-Sol, which will allow the decal to follow the contours of the surface that bit more easily and, again, helpo to reduce the silvering effect you get when you get air under the decal.

Thanks for the advice, have Matt varnished tonight but will gloss before adding decals as suggested, will the gloss varnish lay on the Matt varnish ok, or should I sand it back a bit? Thanks in advance.

Just put a coat of gloss varnish over the matt finish,no sanding necessary.Just make sure u use the same type of paint/varnish (acrylic on acrylic or enamel on enamel).

Richard mentioned decal setting solutions. They come from various manufacturers and are worth using to make your decals look "painted on". I use the two step Microset/Microsol system. The two solutions are available in the UK and are,I'd say,in the middle as far as strength goes.
Use the Microset from the blue bottle to apply your decals. You just splosh a bit on the model and lay the decals onto it.
Once the decals have dried on you can paint them with Microsol from the red bottle. This is the stuff that really softens them and helps them to conform to detail like panel lines or rivets. Once you've applied the solution don't be tempted to touch or fiddle with the decal, let nature take its course. You can repeat this process until you are happy.
Here's a picture of a decal applied to a model I finished recently to give you an idea of just how the decals can be made to conform.

      Cheers

Is there a "best" way to apply this acrylic paint after primer? I cant seem to get rid of brush marks, even if i thin it down slightly it seems to always appear, its a matt paint. Also the matt varnish after putting on almost becomes a light gloss, using Humbrol type matt cote.

If you are brush painting then you stand a better chance of success with enamels as acrylics dry so fast you run the risk of the brush 'pulling'.

You need to let us know what you have done so far so we can advise correctly but if you have an acrylic primer you should be OK over the top of that with enamels. You should go for a matt top coat over the primer, a gloss clear to prepare the surface for the decals, apply the decals, then a matt clear coat over the whole thing.

Let us know just where you are at and what you are getting the brush marks in.
