The Max Holste Broussard was designed to meet a French army requirement for a lightweight liaison and observation aircraft,a sturdy braced high wing aeroplane capable of operating from small un-prepared fields and tight operating areas.
Capable of carrying four passengers the prototype was fitted with a Salmson 8AS Argus engine, however the French air force then decided it wanted a more powerful machine and Max Holste made a larger version that was fitted with the Pratt & Whitney R-985 of proven reliability and performance and accomodation now for five passengers, the Pratt & Whitney having more than double the power of the Salmson.
An ambulance interior could easily be fitted with two stretchers and room for two casualties or two medical attendants.
The Broussard was built in considerable numbers for the military and civil markets serving in the rugged clmes of Africa.
