Having flown lots of Hi-boys and used them for training prior to the ARTF boom in trainers ( which incidently killed off President, as nobody wants to build their first model at least any more ?) can vouch that the 40 sized engine is the best proposition, anything else ie bigger motors adds just too much nose weight.
The beauty of your Hi-boy is that she will cut through any windy days that other models are grounded.

crashed my little eleccy trainer last night- big style.....think its a write off !
having collected the bits and inspected them concerned to see one of the pins from the battery connector had come adrift.... so the electrical supply to motor and radio was interrupted..... i presume this happened whilst in flight rather than the impact...maybe there was some vibration that caused the terminal to work loose... never was a fan of the tamiya type connectors anyway...... but i suppose its a learning curve !- wont use em again !!!!but this would explain the plane going 'dead' whilst in flight......

oh well, the motors ok, the radio is ok, so not a total wreck !

i want to build my models myself

theres no satisfaction in just glueing the wings together and fixing ont he tail plane

my hiboy wasnt the best to build but its better than a artf

my dad still has 7 or 8 kits in the loft 3 half built

we were going to finish the buzzard bombshell trainer but i bought my own hi boy to build and it has 4ch and the bombshell only has 3

there is also a piper cub fusilage build and the wings are in the garage but need repaired cos they got damaged

would the os 40 be a better choise to use that the meteor 40?

Iain, it does depend a bit on what your personal circumstances are.

I simply haven't got the time to build a plane as all my spare times goes into the model ship. However I want to learn to fly so I bought a foam ARTF Cessna. The trouble is the thing is so cheap and nasty I haven't actually got it off the ground yet anyway and I don't know how much time I have put into messing about with it. You just can't win sometimes!

Guy,did you know that those awful bulky Tamiya connectors consume a good 1 volt of power quickly, the pins have a nasty habit of pushing backwards, you think there is an electrical connection but it is just touching the very end.
Next model strip them off including the charger, get some gold connectors, nice and slim and polarity protected with a male and female half, they do not tarnish and are excellent conductors.
Sorry to hear about the crash but you are not a flyboy without having one ! it hurts at first but when you have had a score of them you just go back and build something else to fill the void.
Dont forget also that a man of your skill could always use the bits to build something else for yourself.

Iain, the problem with a lot of newcomers to model flying, is that they are also learning to build at the same time, consequently their building standards leave a lot to be desired, for example you would never believe the number of flying bananas I have seen ! what is a flying banana ? well it is a model with a built in curve to the fuselage, you are trying to fly left and the thing is constantly pulling to the right making life very difficult for the learner and the instructor,so whilst I agree that building your own is great fun and you have the knowledge and help to get things right, there are many who just do not have the time to build but value their leisure flying time, years ago it was unheard of to find what we know accept as ARTF,but make no mistake about it they are here to stay,in America you can now purchase quarter scale scale models all ready to bolt in the engine and radio, there is a company in the UK selling ready to fly quarter scale Bristol F.2B Fighters, and do they fly well ! So the choice is a personal one,I build but still have a few fun ARTF's to buzz around the park on a fine evening that can be placed into the car quickly.

you are right barry, i hate the tamiya type connectors, i use the same connectors we use at work on my boats, my subs, made by a company called elco, gold terminals that fit and remain fitted !- and the terminal housings come in 2 way, 3 way, 4 way and 6 way and all are polarity protected, the plugs and sockets cannot be connected the wrong way round......
as my cheap eleccy trainer has a pre wired motor and ESC i was just being lazy- and did not change them.....oh well you live and learn !
