made the base for the model tonight. i am going to put this in a "display" diorama (roped off with an information board as if it is at an air show)
this is not stuck down yet as i wanted to see what looked best as the cracks. black or white. i think i may leave it white as black would not show up too well.
i made this by cutting a scrap of wood to size. for the slabs i got some cheap sheets of assorted sandpaper, looked through them and chose what corse to use. i settled with G2 but obviously this will change from scale and personal prefference.
I sprayed it white, waited for it to dry over night then sprayed over it with nutural grey. Again obviously this would depend on what you want the concrete to look like.
I then cut them down into 80x120mm sections (again obviously this would vary for different scales and personal prefference)
I have stuck them down with sticky back tape for now but they easily peal off with no damage. Dont use spray glue as it is not strong enough.
You will find the sand paper (being paper and all) may curl up after painting. Make sure you blue tack it down during the spraying stange. Then once all dry just stick it under a weighty book for a day or too to flatten it out!
let me know what you think. all comments, good or bad will be greatly appreciated!
if this works out i am tempted to use it as a photographic stand for future aircraft i make in 1:48
Looks pretty good Richard. When you put it into a frame do not fit the joints in line with the frame buat at an angle and have a small diagonal across a corner as a bit of grass as though it is the edge of the hard.
i doubt i will find a frame for this size. I have just custom made the base to allow for the size of the aircraft. I am going to have to think of another way to make the base a bit more attractive.
but yes you are right...odd is more pleasing to the eye than even! something we use a lot in cooking. try putting 6 bits of tomato/cucumber..whatever and putting them evenly around a plate. then take one away and make them evenly spaced again.
see which looks better!
no idea why it is...just the way our brain works for some strange reason!
possibly by just putting the aircraft on the base at an angle and having the ropes going with the aircraft and not the slabs will give this effect!
when you think about it....when has an plane been lined up with the concrete slabs at airshows?
Hi Richard,
Love the base, I am sure this is going to be the business once it's all done. I love the decals for your plane too. Having done a little search on Google, your decals appear to be from the 2002 Tiger Meet. I found them on this link: http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?im...l%3Den%26lr%3D
and the Pics below are of the Real thing.....Still looks awesome !!!
Regards.......Mark

well my favourite plane is the F-16 and my favourite animal is the tiger (i think that was because when i was in Beavers i learnt that i was born in the year of the tiger.)
i have scrapped my base as i felt it was lacking something. after quite a bit of surfing a found some great techniques and i will show you the finished product tomorrow.
(aslo just to let Bunk know i have taking his advise and put it into practice)
im quite pleased with the outcome. it certainly has alot more character than the last one.
And as we know you wont find a single perfect section of airfield and as John says in his tutorial "What about those old cracked, weed-infested parking spots at the far end of the airfield?"
i like how my "muddy puddle" turned out. Simply brown paint with a "puddle" of gloss cote on top. i think the muddy tire tracks turned out a bit too dark but with the plane on i doubt you will notice them that much.
thaving everything at an angle makes it much more pleasing to the eye!
