This may be stupid.....

I know this might be a stupid question but with all the battery /motor development could one of the larger plastic kits ever fly I don't want to do it but just asking

Don`t know about the likes of Airfix flying. There are a fair few model R/C control planes, which are plastic mouldings. ARC is one manufacturer which do fairly nice flyers.

Although Airfix kits are the correct shape aerodynamically they were never made to fly so the weight proportionaly is far too much for the lift that the wings could generate unless the airflow over them was of an unbelievably high speed.

So theoretically if you could propel them at such a speed it may be possible but you could never get the equipment into the model to be able to get it to those speeds and then it would be so far above scale to be ridiculous and you would never be able to keep your eye on it!

It is all down to power weight ratio again, build them in foam to the same size and yes you have a chance,in fact someone is doing just that 1=72nd scale radio controlled Zero fighters,Mustangs etc,but ordinary plastic is just too heavy, and brittle.
I once put a Jetex motor in a plastic kit of the Folland Midge,it flew around a pylon, boy did it move !
Needless to say it suffered the effects of heat eventually after a lot of fun.

I know quite a few plastic boat kits convert well to R/C ...the Classic one being the Old Matchbox Flower Class Corvette (I am pretty sure that was designed with radio in mind given the numbers that have been converted...and the fact that the kit was re-issued after being discontinued because of the numbers being converted to r/c) Planes however are a different matter purely for the reasons stated in Barry's post above.
At least if you have the drawings/plans, why not scale them up for something that will work. This has been done many times with very good results too.

Regards.......Mark
