1/48 BAe Hawk Kits

Hi guys, I'm pretty new here. I am looking to build a 1/48 T-45C Goshawk, and since none exist, I planned on doing some major conversions to a Hawk Mk.1a.

I know of two kits that currently exist, one is Airfix and the other is Premiere. Has anyone built either of these kits? What are their strong points or weak points? Are there any other kits out there?

I am expecting to have to carry out some modifications, but I'd like to get good research done so I have a solid foundation for the build.

Thanks in advance.

Airfix one is okay if you don't mind a boiled sweet for a canopy.
I have a premier one that I started years ago and not finished. It is a fight and I had to get Matt to do the filling for me, I'm allergic to certain filler and Milliput. He can give you a better idea if you wish.

Hi Mike, I concur with Clippergirl on the canopy of the airfix hawk, and that is only one of its problems.
First off, if you aren't in a desperate hurry for your T-45, Italeri have announced a Hawk Mk1 at Nuremburg in 1/48th. Several years ago they announced a Hawk family , but nothing further came of it then. If the new Hawk does appear and meets with a good reception, then I think it will be likely that a T-45 will follow, but that will be a year away, at least. If your budget is not a consideration I believe that Collect Aire make a T-45. Neither the Premier or the Airfix Hawks are what can be described as a "fun" build, but both, with some effort can be builkt up repectably. Going further and converting either to a T-45 is possible, but hink you would have to be fairly determined.
hope this has been some help.
Matt

Howdy Mike,

well i know you have seen my premiere 1:48th T-45 and i have a testors version of the bae hawk also, but I much preffer the premiere model. I dont recall any filing or filling for that matter.
Now of course the premiere model is of a hawk and not really the T-45 goshawk so my markings arent "real". but the premiere does make a nice looking aircraft even with scrap decals:

All I can suggest is why not build both as T-45's I really think that after you build them you will be pleased with them no matter what company made them.

have a good day,

greg

PS: I forgot you asked if there were any other kits out there, and yes, testors made one (mentioned above) however it was 1:72 scale I am not sure if testors did a 1:48th or not.

Thanks a lot to all of you. Sorry I have been away for a bit - had to move to the new base to fly the new jet. In between places I had to go play in the woods for a few weeks.

I've done some picking at the premier kit, and it will probably be my basis. I am going to have to fill and re-etch the wings, as well as scratch the gear out of brass tube. The wings will likely be first, followed by the cockpit and gear.

The Airfix kit does have a pretty crummy canopy. I plan on using much of the airfix fuselage, with the exception of the nose forward of the intakes.

I'll post photos when I start making headway - this move's been a long one.

Matt, I'll check out the Collect Aire kit. Thanks for the heads up!
