CA nightmare

Hello all:
I had a crazy experience last night that leads to my doubts about this stuff. I'm finishing up a BF109 with head armour (photo etch) I have both ZAP thin and thick glues. While using the thin CA and trying to glue the metal head plate to the plastic canopy lost control of the flow and ruined everything! I'm using the metal glue tips, practiced dry and wet runs on scraps to prepare-dryfitted everything! Any tips or alternatives to this stuff? I'm really worried to move onto other kits I now have that contain metal parts. Thanks again, Jeff

you really dont need much CA for it to do its job. try putting some into a metal fair cake tin type thing or on a scrap of plastic and use a bit of wire to dip into it the apply tiny amounts to the p/e part.

alternativly you can use future/clear to attatch p/e to models. poor some into an air-tight jar (like an old tamiya paint pot cleaned out or something) leave it undone for about half a day and you will see it thickens up to a gel-like substance. you can then use this to attach the parts and it dries quite quickly (although not as quickly as CA)

Howdy Jeff,

Being a southern boy, I some times worry bout you "perpitraitors of unprovoked northern aggression" (yankees) lol just jokin'.
Have you ever tried the thicker super-glue Gel? Its abit easier to apply exactly where you want it, doesnt "run" and still dries about the same speed as the thinner stuff. And like the thinner stuff, dries really fast on contact with skin lol.
I also use "loc-tite" brand adhesives in lieu of super-glue brand or even "zap a gap".
I too have had trouble with the "zap a gap" being too thin for me to work with....its almost thinner than water in my opinion. But, when I run out of loc-tite, I have occassionally used the ZAP a Gap, only now I use a toothpick to apply it when i am forced to use it. I simply dont trust the "bottle" anymore with the stuff.
If you decide to continue to use the stuff, I would also suggest some "cyno-acrylate accelerator", it will dry the stuff almost instantly, so if you do have a "small" mishap, you can stop it where it stands by applying the accelerator, preventing the stuff from flowing all over the model and more importantly, you.
I dont know if you ever use the toothpick method of application of glue, but the amount left by a toothpick is about the amount you need, I know alot of ppl squirt the stuff straight out of the bottle, and I am guilty of this too, especially on a "speed build". But I am slowly trying to regain my patience and self control and use toothpicks as applicators....using just the bottle is a hard habit to break though.
Anyway, I realize I havent told you anything you probably didnt already know, but sometimes, we all need to be reminded of the basics....myself included.

Have a good day and remember, ya'll didnt win the war, we are just regrouping, lulling ya'll into a false sense of security lol,

Thanks guys!
I remember using locktite years ago when I started my machinest training-The gel seems interesting. As for future, I did try the "neat" version but not let it gel-great idea. I just ordered some micro klear-maybe I can remove the canopy, sand down the prints and runs, work with building the layers back up with future and cementing the plastic to the cockpit. I'm still very nervous about CA at this point.

I never apply any glue staright from the bottle/tube. Thicker glues like poly cement or canopy/white glue are applied with toothpick, sometimes sharpened for extra control. Superglue (I only use the runny kind), is blobbed onto an old bit of card or plastic and then applied with the "eye" end of a sewing needle. The "eye" is infact snipped off so that a little U-shape is left. This holds the glue until you touch it to the surface where you want to apply it.

Don't be afraid of glue, Jeff. Unless of course you stick your fingers together (nasty).

even with super expensive metal tips? I thought that plastic would bond instantly but I did not try the tooh picks. Also, I love the sewing needle idea! I'm going to try these to night when I'm away from the baby. Although, would CA work on the boob? My Wife would find this most useful
