I’d like to thank everyone for their help and suggestions. I’ve decided to build it build it scale. I mean, really scale. The full sized bird was light and strong. I found on my 1/6 scale that often the easiest way to do something was the way they did it. So, I plan on building it pretty much like the original. I have drawings of the interior structure that I can use as a reference, and John sent me a parts catalog (I’m in trouble now! That’s like giving a junkie a year’s supply dope!)

I’ve finished the CAD drawings of the wings, so I guess I’ll build a jig and get started on wing ribs. That will be a good summer project (for rainy days). I plan on flying a bunch this year. Last summer I spent all my time getting my plane finished for a contest. This summer I just want to play.
When I get going, I’ll start a new post. I wouldn’t think of building this without your company!

Really?? 1/1 scale, the whole hog as it were?

Can't wait to see your progress, I have one observation, either,

1. You've not told the wife,
2. You've got a trailer big enough to sleep in!!

LOL, No, I think I'll stay with 1/3 scale (and my wife!)

How much detail will you be able to cram into the 1/3rd scale model compared to the 1/6th scale model? Sounds like you want to keep the construcion process close to the original so it's more of a scale replica than a model.

What sort of powerplant would you use for that size too? At that size I would have thought you'd want something to resemble the original as closely as possible!

Actually, I pretty much got everything to fit on my 1/6 scale. At the FAI contest last fall it scored 2853 for static out of 3000. I don't think I can squeeze much more than that out of the judges. With the larger scale I want to make some things functional, like the radiator shutters and some instruments. But the main reason is how much better the big birds fly.
I haven't decided on a power plant yet. I really like the sound of the four strokes. Very realistic. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You were asking about suitable engines for this SE5s, well as you may have gathered from my threads I do have a thing for Lasers, British engineering at its very best! But I’m not alone; if you check out the top scale modellers an awful lot of them also use Lasers.

Mick Reeves used a V twin for his 1/3rd scale Sopwith Pup, see this link:

Mick Reeves Models

As for the sound, and I certainly agree with you that it’s very important; once again I don’t think you can beat a Laser V twin, I just wish he made smaller ones that would be suitable for my models. Below is a link to a video made by Giles of his 200 V twin used in his ¼ scale SE5a

YouTube - Laser Engine - 200V

If you have any queries you can always contact Laser Engines, they are a really helpful and friendly lot. Their web address is:

Laser Engines

I’m really looking forwards to the build thread.

Grahame, thanks for the links. that V twin really sounds nice. I would have to agree with you about British engineering. I put an RCV 91 CD in my 1/6 scale. It fits in the same area as a Saito 56, and it runs great every time. Maybe if I start saving now I'll be able to get that V twin. It would sure be nice.
