| Prototypes worth modelling-The Hawker Hurricane. There are Spitfire lovers and Hurricane lovers, but for my money the Hawker Hurricane has some very desirable design features for model building, the nice thick wing section with its excellent wing tip shape, easily modelled cockpit canopy, generous tail surfaces and a sensible moment arm all add up to a design waiting to be built.
Cambrian kits made the excellent little fun fighters and I built the Hurricane powered her with the excellent MDS.28 and boy does she fly, although a heavier wing loading being small a hefty hand launch gets her airborne nicely and once she is away she grooves around the sky,for those fitting a retract undercarriage the deep section wing again makes for a more workmanlike assembly.
The biggest problem with these fighter designs is the camouflage colour schems which can be a big problem with dis-orientation when in flight, although a friend has got around this problem by painting his example yellow to represent the zinc chromate primer used on the prototype example with a nice polished cowl to boot.
Regarding plans there are plenty available right up to Bryan Taylors good drawings for a large radio subject, there are also plenty of free plans available on the net for small Hurricanes for electric or rubber power.
Dont forget the secret ingredient for any low wing aeroplane to make them safely wing drop free, and that is a few degrees of washout incorporated into the wingtips, works every time and stops the dreaded wingtip stall especially on tricky fighters when the speed decays on landing.
Lets see more Hurricanes in the air next season ?
