Prototypes worth modelling-The Brunswick university Zaukonig.

The perfect safe flying machine, that above all could be flown by any man in the street despite his lack of any aviation knowledge has always been explored, this dream today of flying cars ( heaven forbid any aerial traffic jams !) has been investigated in recent years whereby aircraft would fly along laser guided lines to their destination, the experiments of the Brunswick technical college were far more basic, in that they wanted to see if a machine could be built that any ordinary person could fly regardless of any such knowledge but with a few words like push throttle forward to gain flying speed, pull back to land, hold stick in centre to land straight ahead, all of the normal nasty bad habits such as stalling, wing dropping etc were taken care of by automatic devices, slots, slats the lot so it really was a case of just open the throttle and the airplane would sort itself out and fly safely.
Well that was the theory and did it work ? the answer is a resounding yes, many different walks of life were given the chance to take here aloft and she still survives to this day, well two actually were built which are both now back in Germany after going around the world.
As regards a model subject the design is excellent,a parasol wing of generous proportions, large tail and vertical surfaces with a long nose, all of which lend themselves to a good overall flying machines,to my knowledge at least one plan was published for good old free flight but this could easily be converted to micro radio and even electric power if desired, she would certainly make a novel talking point and you should like the real one have a viceless aeroplane that is a bit different.

Agree 100% about Zaunkoenig(Wren) being a cinch for an ultra STOL/slow-flier and quaint looking. I thought about it when it was first published in Aeromodeller for my ED Bee but the oval monocoque fuz was a bit beyond my skill level then (probably still is I hear them say !) I had a walk-around the one in the Flugwert Scheissheim airfield near Munich and started dreaming but.... Reminded me of Fiesler Storch,Wilga and SAL Pioneer(single) all flaps and slats. Time for an r/c version, depron brigade would love it. Uninspired colour scheme though. We could always imagine that they went into production and cut loose with the "private owner`s" imaginary colours. Why am I thinking Rupert Moore, Barry?

*** You have just jogged my dusty memory cells Duncan, one of the magazines promised a plan for electric, the same chap that did the Chrislea Ace,nothing appears to have come of this ? yes the round fuselage is a bit of a pain, perhaps good old planking is the answer, and a big yes to depren, light and bouncy, discovered a way of painting it lightly with artists acrylic as well.
I am beginning to wonder if Rupert Moore did tackle this subject,he certainly did a cover painting for the Aeromodeller,I can see it in my mind now,yes go and design a decent scheme, what does it matter with civil anyway ? the Luftwaffe had a project for a very similar machine to the Zaukonig that was never constructed, makes me wonder if the design had other connections for wait for it- 'The peoples aeroplane' the Volkswagon of the skies,it is a nice thought anyway ? so what about a 'what if' in Luftwaffe colours ?
