Be sure to join a club Iain. or become a SAA country member if no club nearby. Which part of Scotland are you located,I might be able to advise. Forget the 4stroke for the moment, not realy for beginners. Best of luck with the building.

last time i knew there was a place where there was a total of 2 people

my dad used to fly a while ago still got all the old radio gear

i will prob be putting in a jr magreggor apex

its my dad who said we could put in the 4 stroke

4 stroke needs timmed though it was all seized so we had to take the rocker rod things out and it musta knocked timing off

Aha ! methinks this is Dad getting back into modelling again after a while.!!! You live just up the road from me, I`m in Aviemore. There is a club here (Cairngorm MFC), one in Dingwall, one in Elgin and just ask in Jackie Wilson`s model shop in the Victorian Market in Inverness about the local Highland MFC. Ask Santa for a nice new 2stroke to suit your plane, keep the four stroke till you learn a bit more about model engines. Only 3 moving parts in the 2stroke, simple, no timing probs, etc. Think about a powered glider to start with.

Iain the President Hi-boy is a true classic trainer but you will need some help as she comes into land pretty fast and you just will not be able to cope as a raw beginner, get someone to help as Duncan suggests with a buddy box set up,this is two transmitters linked together, when you get into problems which you will ! the experienced flyer takes over,I used too have a flying school and used the Hi-boy with great success, when the ARTF ( Amost readt to fly ) scene took place the High-boy sales dropped dramatically, but at least you have built her and provided she has no warps should be ok.
Check the centre of gravity marked on the plan and make sure your model is well within limits, make sure your fuel tank does not have any leaks and is airtight, more problems are caused with bad pipe connections on guel tanks than the engines themselves, run your engine at home first and when running hold the model vertical, the engine should not cut,if it does there is a problem, run the engine rich with plenty of smoke at first as the model engine will lean out as she takes off and gathers speed.
Regarding that four stroke, try setting her up like this, turn the engine over so that the engine is at TDC ( Top dead centre) slacken off the valve gear nut and the lock nut, place a piece of silver foil under the valve tappet and tighten that up so the foil will slip easily in and out,now turn the engine through and do the exhaust setting, set this up exactly the same,if the timing is out then the chances are that the cam is badly worn or someone has dismantled the engine and assembled her incorrectly.
Best to fit a 40 size two stroke, cheap and reliable, keep your fourstroke for the future as Duncan says.
Best of luck and if you need any more help then here is the place to ask any questions.
Once you are flying you will just love it.

OK Iain, get your instructor to take off and land for you initially, when you do eventually get confident in handling her practise big wide circuits lining up with something on the horizon as you do the various turns to land ie into wind, climb out, turn across wind, then downwind, then finally onto base leg keep practising these until you get the model lined up for a landing and it become second nature to you,the first time you land dont worry if you get the strip first time, accuracy will come later.
If you have a good model flight simulator then start using it now,it will help you when you handle the real thing but there is no substitute for the real model flying.
Dont fly flat out in the beginning, throttle back until the model feels comfortable to you, more people get into problems this way, golden rule is keep upwind and make your first nervous turns high up,you will soon begin to get a feel for the way the model flys.
Wish that I was there to assist you but get someone who is prepared to devote some time with you.
Best of luck.
