JMSDF 'Oyashio'

My Small World Models 1:96 scale 'Oyashio' surfacing this afternoon. This was the first run and a little bit of 'balancing' is still needed. A pitch control unit will also be fitted. This model uses airbrush propellant to vent the ballast tank but experiments are underway using air duster as it's less toxic - to me! As usual with subs the turning circle is rubbish so I guess some work will be needed on that too. I also had my SWM Kilo down (sorry no pics) and that worked perfectly on its first sail - makes a change for me!

Looks to be a good sub Andrew. Hope you can get her trimmed out ok and have many many hours fun chasing the "targets" around the pond

Firstly many thanks for all your kind comments - I hope to add a couple more pics once further progress has been made.
One of the challenges with these SWM subs is that they are powered up by attaching the battery cables to the circuitry - there is no on/off switch. This means that you have first to switch on your Tx; connect the battery; assemble all 5 parts of the wtc; install and fix the wtc into the bottom hull; connect the propshaft and the rudder and plane linkages; gas-up; attach the hull top and test everything is functioning properly. Then you can launch! This takes time and meanwhile the batteries are discharging.
Late last night I decided to order a magnetic on/off switch from Engel and install this inside the wtc. This will mean that the whole sub can be assembled at home and on arrival pondside all I will need to do is gas-up, swipe a magnet over the switch, attach the hull top and off I go! I suspect this switch might prove of interest to people other than submariners too.
I would like to add that this part was ordered late last night and by 08.30am this morning Engel had e-mailed me to say that it had already left their warehouse and was on its way to me by airmail! Absolutely superb service - as I find is the case with the other sub specialists Pandan/Subtech and Sheerline. We submariners are in my opinion very well cared for by our specialist suppliers.

Always Nice to hear of good service from Suppliers, makes the Hobby more enjoyable and it is nice to give them credit where it is due.

I hope the switch set up works well for you, sounds like it will certainly save a lot of hassle for you.

And is that one of your in the Banner at the top of the page?

I fit 2 brass bolts through the WTC and connect them to the negative wire of the ESC (to the reciever). Simply connect the circuit with a brass stip (and fit nuts on the bolts to hold it down). Cheaper than a magnetic switch. There will still be a tiny current draw as the main battery is still connected to the ESC, but its best not to have a switch between the main battery and ESC which carry higher currents.
