Hi John, Google 'Tirpitz model colours' and you will find this Tamiya 1/350 DKM Tirpitz, reviewed by Kevin Krueger among others. Good luck with the model. Cheers Derek

Hi again John, The website below is for Lifecolor paints for German WWII ships colors, if you click on each colour you will get a comparison chart for different paint manufacturers for that colour. When you mention Tamiya I assume you are going to airbrush, as hand painting is a disaster on large areas with Tamiya Acrylic. I am going to use Lifecolor on my Trawler I am presently building, this is an excellent water based Acrylic. Cheers Derek

Taking Derek's advise on a bit, if I'm reading your thread correctly, it's your dad who will be building and painting this model, is this correct John?

If so, and if he has had no experience with an A/B, I strongly recommend he paints it by hand. If he does, as Derek points rightly states, avoid Tamiya Acrylics at all costs.....

Get him some Vallejo Model Colour ( John on here has these) they are great for large areas such as the hull and deck of the Tirpitz. Thinned down first with water mind!

      Cheers,
      Ron

Also you might like to consider dropping an e-mail at White Ensign models. I am sure that he will tell you exactly which colours you will need to use. You can them order them from him. WEM paints are very good and brush on exceptionally good. They are Enamels so pong a bit, but evey thing has its price, right?

Here are the Colours for the Kriegsmarine range: https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/c/Kriegsmarine+Colours/50/1/

He really shouldn't have any problems spraying or brush painting with tamiya acryl, third with ipa or their own thinner it sprays and paints well.
Conversely I've had unsatisfactory results spraying and brush painting vallejo. I guess it's different for everyone but that's my experience with them. The only time I won't use tamiya is for gloss finishes as the paint doesn't stay wet long enough, for gloss I use enamel..

m1ks, you are quite right that people have different results when using the same paint. The prep. work could be good, bad or none at all!lol

My point was that if John's dad is building and painting 'Tirpitz' and he has had no experience of a/b.'s, then he would possibly be safer brush painting anyway.....

      Cheers,
      Ron

well lads thank you for all your help there are some good points ron i think your right about tamiya ive got all the range and its not the best to hand paint so i will avoid them but i also agree with m1ks im not a fan of vallejo either

and cheers derek for the help with the links your star

and as its for my dad i think im might go with the enamels its probably what he used all them years ago when he built as you stated ron its all by hand he doesn't even now what an ab is

thanks again for the help and many answers you were all on mark
