I used to be and had a pretty substantial layout a couple of years ago but I haven't got the room or the contestants anymore.

Remember the Airfix 1/32nd cars that you could convert to the Airfix slot car racing tracks. I had a Mark 1 Cortina and an E-Type Jag!

We have a Scalextric set that we get out on and off but we always crash the cars by going to fast round the curves.I also have a matchbox cops and robbers set but the track isn't in great condition anymore but i have loads of cars for it that i got for free.

something i`ve fancied for a while, we do have a club here reasonably close but i`ve never ventured into it, maybe i will some day.
i`ve never really owned a racetrackbut my brother did have a Race and chase ( matchbox cops and robbers dynamite )
always wanted a TCR but never really happened.
My dad have a Revell set from many many moons ago with a few revell kit cars , but that was ,alas, disposed of at a car boot sale.

Now you've got me started Nigel! I remember getting one of the first Scalextric sets to arrive up here (Edinburgh) in Easter 1956 or 7 (I think). Tinplate Ferrari and Maserati on a figure of 8 track. Championships were held by the manufacturers in various cities throughout Britain with the finals in Hamleys in London in the summer. Somehow I ended up getting through and was sent on an expenses paid trip to compete at Hamley's. I can remember staying at the Cumberland Hotel along with the other finalists. Didn't quite win the final but came away with a deal to test their development models at our boarding school club. We had the early plastic prototypes of the front engined Lotus and Vanwall a year before they appeared. Our job was to test them to destruction and try out new pick up designs to replace the earlier gimbals. One device I recall had a ball beraing pick up but these were quickly abandoned in favour of the the brushed pick ups. One of our keener enthusiasts was one Frank Williams who has since gone on to develop his interest in full size Scalextric. Some of the older members of this forum may also recall the Revell kits that you built up with pressed steel chassis and highly detailed body shells. I can also recall a 4wd Mercedes that I built from a kit - but can't remember the manufacturer now. Later came the tiny Wrenn 152 Ferraris. I wonder what happened to them? I used to spend as much time modifying my cars in those days as I spend nowadays on my submarines!

Yes, I don't think it matters how old you are when it comes to these, stick a decent track down and some cars and we are all Big Kids...me included, but you can't beat a good slot car set. I had my first one when I was 5 and had to wait till after Xmas dinner to get a go on it, only because my dad and my grandad were hogging it !!!

I bought my Eldest Nephew one of the Tomy Afx sets years ago, then it had 19.5 Metres of track, it has much more now as we have bought extra track sections....we have had many hours of fun with it and even though my nephew is now 22, he still has it....!!!

Regards........Mark.
