Professor TC's Tinkering

hi guys, just thought I would let you in on a few tinkerings with my tank.
Some of you will already know that before xmas I ordered a Hen Long Tiger 1 (H-F Trade, dont go near them). The company that sold me it were in Germany and thoroughly ripped me off. The transmitter for this tank was never going to work as solder was all over the place on the mobo. But all is not lost!
Possibly the only remotely good thing about Hen Longs is the smoke unit. After metering its voltage and current draw it became apparent that it will run off the 7.2v pack in the Tam Tiger 1 and 2. I then plugged it in and what do ya know....It works!!!!! My king Tigger now has exhaust smoke!!. Also the led's that are used for the machine gun are the same as the Tam only clear instead of orange. Now all I need to do is drill out the exhausts.
Also found a nice Tam tiger 2 on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEBI%3AIT&rd=1
I think I'll get outbid again tho.

Smoke units for boats may be worth considering. Try the Robbe units or the Graupner one. These are very small and quite neat but they do generate heat so care must be taken with locating them.

Hunter make one but it falls apart after a few hours so don't bother with that one.

tADAAAAAA !!!!

There ya go...fitted....it rocks (cant stop giggling like a girl now).

And now for the good bit!

Had to drill out the plastic exhausts, Remove the Tam speaker box. The only reason the speaker box so big is to give reverb and add that extra burble..

Ebay Tigger

Yeh I know the one I'm bidding on looks a bit in need of attention (Just incase the owner is looking in!). Thing is I need the practice, painting and weathering wise. Also I have just destroyed my sons Heng Long (It didnt work anyway, but he wasnt best pleased. So I have promised him another that will work!
If I get the Ebay one for around the 300 mark I will be happy otherwise its a trip to the honkongcowboy £300 unbuilt + TX/Rx.
But thanks for the advise Nige and don't worry, I won't get bid happy.
I'm impressed though. Tamiyas keep there money quite well and dont tend to depreciate as much as other tanky stuff.

In answer to Rj's question in the shout box.
Nige is your man on Tigers really.
But the cheapest by far is a guy on Ebay called hongkongcowboy, he does Tigers 1&2 for about £230 + delivery (£50). He gets round Uk import tax by saying its a gift worth less than £50. If you do cop for import tax its still cheaper than UK prices. I got mine from a guy in Belgium called cheguevara for £300 all in check Ebay user terencepotter (Thats me) you will see the details of the one I already have In my feedback bit. And remember, exchange rates between UK and US are awesome at the moment, so it might be worth checking out US suppliers.
With the Tamiya Tigers you get everything you need apart from paint and TX/RX. I am fairly new to all this too, but I would imagine there are no better tanks an the market unless ou go upto 1/6 scale, and they start at about £2500. Also with the Tams there are never ending metal upgrade parts. A new boxed Tamiya has an all metal chasis and running gear allready all the other extra upgrades ar mainly for a smoother ride or cosmetic.
Like I said earlier NigeD is yr man for tanks really. So forive me if anything mentioned above is wrong.
Thanks for the advice as well Bunk. But the smoke unit i have put in is based on the same design as smoke machines in nightclubs. Small element which burns a water based oil to produce smoke, which is then pumped out the exhaust. It only takes a small element to produce plenty of smoke off this type. With no noticeable heat coming from the outer case. The noise off the pump adds to tank, it actually sounds like a knackered deisel engine, with the fan belt slipping...lmao

Just out of interest I have just fitted a new smoke generator to my boat which is powered by a Nebuliser.

This generates water vapour by putting ultra-high frequency through it and thuis flashes off vapour. It runs on water, top it up through the funnel when it stops, and doesn't use heat. The main drawback is its size but for a big boat hull that is not an issue. It also produces loads of vapour so looks very effective.

I don't know if the idea will ever hit the tank world but it does have endless possibilities.

richard, these sound well intresting, any chance of some piccys?

EDIT_

Tiger....what motors and ESC do those tanks use? This might not be relavent but tam cars are 7.2/800 stock, however you can run these on 8.4/1200 with no troubles. We've got an old TL-01 scooby on 9.6v/800 and it flies. My point being i was wondering why all you guys use 7.2 as theres no much juice in that, or is it just a scale/speed thing?
